The Things We'd Say

The Things We'd Say

A Poem by Thomas Snider
"

Kind of a doubter poem.

"

I want to say “I love you.”
You would probably say, “No.”
I want to say, “I need you.”
You would probably say, “So?”

I’d end up saying, “I’m sorry.”
You’d probably say, “I know.”
I’d end up saying, “Please don’t leave me.”
You’d probably say, “I should go.”

I’d end with, “Smile bright.”
You’d probably say, “I don‘t know if I should.”
I’d end with, “Why is that?”
You’d probably say, “For you I never could.”

I’d feel my heart start to break.
You’d start to walk away.
I’d feel a pain at my chest.
For with you my heart will stay.
