The Great AwakeningA Story by Hope RoseThe Great Awakening The light shone dimly through the clouds the day before school was scheduled to start again. He couldn’t help thinking to himself:”How am I going to live through another year? There’s no way I can do it. Later on that day, Joshua went for a walk while singing a song. While he walked, he passed a park. There was a very young couple there. They were in no more than 3rd grade. They were kissing when he saw them. And here he was in High-School, and he had never had a girlfriend. He just kept walking. He was in a group last year at school, a group of five. He was the only single one in the group. His best friend, James, tried to help him get a girlfriend but Josh, as most of his friends called him, said he wanted to get a girlfriend on his own. About a week after school started, Joshua asked if he could sit alone at lunch from now on. The others in the group were surprised. Normally Joshua wanted to be with them at any time. This was certainly strange. He mostly just sat there and didn’t eat much of his food. He just stared off into space, like he was in a trance. That day when he got home, he went for another walk. He was listening to a song when he saw this beautiful girl reading on a bench. He couldn’t help but stare at her. Nervously, he walked over to her and said hello. She looked up and said hello back. He sat down and they started talking.”Where do you go to school at?” he asked. “Actually, I just got enrolled in a school not far from here.” She told him the name of the school and he was shocked to learn that it was his school. He asked when she would start going there, and she told him she was starting on the Monday of next week. He was thrilled. He then thought of one crucial fact: How could someone as perfect as her possibly be single? She probably already had a boyfriend that went to the same school. When he went to school the next day, he went to the cafeteria (the place where everyone goes before school starts) and was surprised to see that Elizabeth was sitting with his group of friends. He went over to sit down, and she looked up at him. “Hey, aren’t you the guy I met in the park the other day?”She asked. “Yep, that’s me. “He replied. They all started talking until the bell rang, time for first hour. Before she had the chance to leave, he said, “Hey, I never got your name!” “Elizabeth.” Elizabeth. Wow what a beautiful name. He couldn’t help but think of whether or not he should ask her out. She was in all his morning classes, and then he found out she was in all his afternoon classes as well. Wow. Lucky break, all classes together. And even better, he sat next to her in every class. He could ask her out, but the thought came to him again. How could she be single? He had to take a chance, at least then he would know for sure. A month passed and he still didn’t. On November 5, he told her to meet him after school. She wondered what he was planning, but she didn’t ask any questions. After school, she waited for him outside the gym. When everything had cleared out, she wondered if she heard him right. She had already called her parents and told them she would be late getting home. She didn’t want to be embarrassed by having to call them and tell them what happened. 10 minutes passed, and she picked up her phone. She started to dial her parents’ number when he came around the corner calling her name. She shut her phone and asked him what took him so long. “Sorry, I thought you would be waiting at the lockers, not here.” She was embarrassed that it was her fault he was late. He told her to follow him. It was twilight by now, and the sun seemed like it was setting faster. She asked him where they were going but he wouldn’t tell. Along the way, he called his mom and told her he would be late getting home. Evidently Elizabeth and Joshua’s parents met and Joshua’s parents were at Elizabeth’s house. Since they both received the same call they figured they were together. They were starting up a hill by the time it was almost completely dark. They reached the top and there was a single tree in the center of the hill. Joshua motioned for her to sit down so she did. He sat down next to her. ‘Will you go out with me, Elizabeth? “She was actually shocked. She agreed, and by this time it was night. They stay together looking at the brightly shining moon. They sat in silence for about 15 minutes. She broke the silence. “How long have you liked me?” He didn’t expect her to ask that. “Well, to be honest. Since the first time I met you, back in the park.” She looked shocked, but looked back at the moon. Joshua looked at his watch. Midnight. “Um what time was I supposed to have you home by?” She stared at him. “Um. I think it was 11;00.” Great. An hour past curfew. Great way to start of the relationship. He got up then helped her up. The unbelievable happened then. He saw the moon shining in her eyes. He leaned in and he kissed her. As shy as he was, the same night he had asked her out. After the kiss, her eyes lit up. She was delighted, he could tell. “Time to go?” he asked. “I will call our parents so they don’t worry. Do you want me to tell them you kissed me or not?” she replied. “I couldn’t care less.” He commented as they started walking down the hill. They started walking back to her house, which was about a half hour away. When they finally got to her house, her parents came out to meet Joshua. He thought they would yell at him for having her out so late. “Have a good time tonight?” they asked simultaneously. Elizabeth blushed. “I trust that you both were being safe tonight?” her father, Clayton, asked. “We just sat on that big hill out by town, talked, and watched the moon rise into the beautiful sky. There was only one thing I could think of at the time that was prettier, and the thing I’m thinking of outshines it by a long shot.” Joshua replied. “That’s good to hear, Elizabeth, time to go to bed. You have another full day of school tomorrow. I’m just glad that you only have a half day on Friday.” Her mother, Esme, said. “Yes mother.” Elizabeth said as she walked into the house. “I better be getting home, it was nice to meet you.” Joshua said. “Same to you, drive carefully, the deer will be looking for something to run in front of, and you’re the best target on this dark night.” Clayton replied. Joshua smiled and walked off to his car and he drove home, his mother, Marilyn, was waiting up for him. “Elizabeth’s parents seem nice, I had to come home because it was getting really late.” She said. “They are very nice, and I’m going to go to bed now. See you in the morning.” He replied, as he walked to his bed. The next morning, Joshua’s father, Matthias, was watching the news when Joshua woke up. “There was a shootout in Newton at 3:56 last night. Isn’t that where your girlfriend lives?” He asked Joshua. “You’re right. I’m going to go early today, so I can see if she’s all right.” He replied. He got in his car and drove to Newton. He went to Elizabeth’s house first, like he said he would. While he was driving, he could see that it appeared to be the opposite part of town that had the shootout of the part that Elizabeth lives in. He knocked on Elizabeth’s door. “Good morning Joshua, Elizabeth already went to school, she said she had to do something there and she had to get it done early.” Esme said. “Oh ok. Thanks.” He replied, and drove off to school. When he got to school, he could hear someone in the computer lab. He walked up and found that Elizabeth was the only person in the room. “So you did come to school early, today.” He said, shocking Elizabeth. “Yeah, I had to type out this paper for Social Studies. You know that Klier likes things typed.” She replied. “I went to your house to see if you were O.K., because my dad saw on the news this morning that there was a shootout in Newton.” He said. “Oh yeah, it was on the opposite side of town, though. My mom says I must have been really tired because I slept through it all.” She said, laughing a little. “Well, I’m going to head home now, since they cancelled school for a few days due to the idiot that shot at police. Stupid Idiot.” She said. “I never heard that school was cancelled. Huh. Well, I guess I better get home too, then.” He paused a moment.” Hey, was it your parents that said school was cancelled?” he asked her. “Yeah, why?” she replied. “Well, I haven’t heard this from anyone else, and I saw a Bus on its way to pick some people up today. Seems kind of suspicious. I think our parents are up to something.” He said. “Hang on, I’m going to go check the calendar downstairs.” She said, then ran down the stairs. I thought for a moment. “Wait, that’s the bus that always goes to the shop for checkup, I forgot about that.” He said to himself. Elizabeth came rushing back to the lab.”You’re not going to believe this, it’s Saturday!” she yelled. “I’m going home and demanding an explanation.” She yelled again. “Same.” He said. He drove home and found that Elizabeth was at his house with her parents, talking to Joshua’s parents. “Knew it.” He muttered too low for anyone to hear. “Hey Josh, our parents were up to something, just like you said.” Elizabeth said. “I was afraid of that.” He said. Alison, Elizabeth’s friend, was also there. “Hey Joshua, we’re all going on a trip to Ash Fall, Nebraska to see some dinosaur skeletons. All of us are going, your mother will drive me, Elizabeth, and you, while her parents will be driving with Elizabeth’s little brother.” She said, excitedly. “You have a little brother?” Joshua asked Elizabeth. “Yeah, I never talk about him because he is an annoying pain in the butt. But I guess sometimes he isn’t a total idiot.” She replied. “Oh, cool.” They got packed up and got in the car, Joshua’s mother drove, of course, Alison sat up front with her, and Joshua and Elizabeth sat in the back. “So Alison-“his mother started to say. “Please, just call me Ali.” Ali said. “All right, Ali, do you have a boyfriend?” Marilyn asked Ali again. “Yeah, but it’s not as serious as Josh and Liz.” She laughed a little. “I’ve never held his hand.” There was a little bit of shuffling in the back seat. Marilyn smiled. They got back in the car after they took a rest stop, and found a mysteriously placed newspaper setting in the car. Elizabeth began reading it. This is what it said: Supernatural Wolf Children! Witnesses say they saw two kids, a girl and a boy, their names: Elizabeth and Michael, Jump off of the roof of their school building. The witnesses say the two kids Erupted into wolves as they ran away from the school yard. They were gone before anyone had any time to react. The Wolf Children are on the loose, and nearby towns are fearing for their lives Will these “Werewolves” pose a threat? Or are they here to help? “Wow! Real werewolves! I bet these aren’t real. These so-called witnesses are probably just making this up to get the popularity.” Elizabeth said after reading the article. © 2016 Hope RoseAuthor's Note
