Frustrated

Frustrated

A Poem by Sarah Flanigan

A frustrated, young poet sits in her mom's Camry
in the Walgreens parking lot madly scribbling
a poem, on the verge of tears because:

The words that she could always so easily manipulate before
now stick in her throat like  under-cooked biscuit dough,
refusing to emerge from her vocal cords and set her free.

She was not ready for college,
but she so stupidly let her parents talk her into college
and out of following her heart and now,
she's the most miserable she's ever been.

Sleep evades her, leaving her to wallow in her bed sheets,
praying for sleep to come wash over her and sweep her
away from this world for a few hours.

The sweet, beautiful, intelligent, bright-eyed child
who had so much potential didn't turn out to be
the child her parents ever expected.

Her world is spiraling out of control
and she can't reach the brake.

Sarah, please know that your parents mean well, and they only want the best for you. I have a son in his junior year at college, and I can't tell you how proud I am of him, and how much these years since high school have changed him.

I think its in our DNA to fear change, we all do. But you've got to look at it for what it is...it's your future, and its waiting for you to take ahold of it, to mold it, even to fight for what you want it to be. Nobody else can do that for you, sure, your parents can push you, but it's really up to you!

You're pretty good at writing. Let that be a catharsis for you, your voice in this life. It will help having an outlet to channel your frustrations to, and eventually, your joys! Give it time, and be patient with yourself, most of all. Have faith, and believe you can do it!

I wish you the best!
