Spent

Spent

A Poem by Sarah Flanigan

He was a giver.
He always gave all he could
to whomever needed it most.

Time, talents,
money, a shoulder to cry on,
a listening ear, friendship.

He held nothing back.

He gave
and gave
and gave
until he had nothing left

And then, he gave more.
He never seemed
to get anything in return.

He never minded.
He knew the people
appreciated his efforts

That knowledge
was enough for him.
He was happy.

But one day,
he realized that
he had simply given
too much.

He had nothing left for anyone.
He was letting down the people
he loved so dearly.

He was no longer helping them,
He was hurting them.
That was the last thing he ever
wanted to do.

He had made a huge mistake.
People had begun to turn against him.
Soon, he hadn't a friend left in the world.

And he couldn't fix it,
no matter what he tried.ty

Sometimes we fail to recognize that we need to take a little for ourselves from time to time so that we can continue to give. But for those who are giving by their very nature often see too late that they need to look after themselves. This is good!
