Long Tailed Rats of the Wood

Long Tailed Rats of the Wood

A Poem by John

The winter was beautiful but for squirrels hard
Behind the snowy limbs and leafs a few
Just a few survived being the three in all the yard
And for yards for blocks around it was true
And she found him huddled in a nest in a tree
And she brought him bird seed another one had stashed
In a whole where a limb had broken and rotted free
And she brought him bird seed until in his warm nest they crashed
And they each took turns keeping a small male alive
But he was so weak from all the snow and cold
Instead of bright eyed and full of the energy to survive
His coat was ragged making him look old
But he survived and was the fittest of the two males;
Come next summer there are six for God's nature prevails.
