Ouija Board

Ouija Board

A Poem by Michael Hof
"

Friends play a deadly game

"
My friends and I
Thought we'd give it a try
To contact the dead
We weren't right in the head

Playing on a board
A game of chess
With forces
With powers
I cannot stress

Drunk we were
A liar I'm not
Playing on that board
We got

Hands on the piece
As a tender hush
Falls on the bunch

Huddled in a room
Dimly lit
With candle sticks

The night was creepy
I'd say at least
Every shadow
Contained a beast

On the prowl
Looking for us
Ripping the night
With a vicious howl

Just the wind
We'd say aloud
Closer we'd crowd

"Is someone here?"
No response
No fear

"This sh*t isn't real"
A break in the tension
No big deal

A laugh comes
Regurgitated idiocy
Teenage tenacity

A candle goes out
The girl
Shouts

Silence befalls
Terrifies all

Nothing happens still
Hands off the board
I feel ill

The quenched candle
Flies out of its handle
Hitting me in the back of
The head

The girl lets out a scream
But nothing it would seem
Would come out instead
Except her tongue
Flopping around
near the bed

My best friend Dan
He lost his hand
We watch it darken and glean
Filled with gang green
It happened in seconds
A new world record

Opposite him
In the ensuing storm
Sat Tim
Who lived in
The dorm

Tim floats up
Into the air
Then comes down
With a cracking
Sound

Paralyzed
that day
That we decided to play
He won't walk
Another day

Then they're is me
Where am I now?
A mental institution
How?

I'm not in control
My mind isn't my own
Don't worry
I'm paying a toll

I wake up screaming
Every night
Where the creature
That attacked
Is still in sight

He meets me still
On top of a hill
He tells me to kill
"I won't"
"… YOU WILL…"

This is really well done, with a creepy tale unfolding gradually while arousing suspense. I remember on summer camp a group of girls messing about with one and it really freaked everyone out. Yeah I know there are many logical explanations, but the mystery and unexplained remains. I like your ending ! Justine

Nicely done. I admire your style in this one, the structure lends itself to horror; those short, powerful lines from which emanates your horror. Totally entertained!
