The Bridge that Love BuiltA Poem by Michael HofA haunted bridge
Driving down
One foggy night On the road near the sound Looking for a fright We heard From old lore There was a bridge Protected by a man with a beard The man is long dead He built the bridge It's said For his beloved The bridge was Built with love in each nail Hoping this bridge proposal Wouldn't fail He was rejected The next day However the structure forever Would stay The woman Loved another This failure He couldn't smother He jumped To his death Off the bridge He had left To this day still The bridge Won't look ill No vandal Has ever been seen Again We come to it Like we had heard Nothing's a miss Also there is no man with a beard This bridge is pristine One hundred years old But nothing is tarnished Like it just got a fresh coat Of varnish Though work has never been done To upkeep This bridge Filled with mystique We drive over slowly Cautious We coast In no hurry When we're almost done My friend thought it'd be fun To tempt fate His curiosity he couldn't satiate He throws a bag Out the window It floats down Lands on the ground The wind picks up The chirps And croaks Stop The water underneath Seemingly reverses flow And a man with a beard Appears He stands In front of us His figure: wispy His eyes: angry Eyes are blood red He wants us dead For the insult we flung On his love No motion here From the man with the beard But the car flips Into the water Because of our blunder The man has his wish And tonight we sleep with the fish © 2013 Michael Hof |
