A Whistling Breeze

A Whistling Breeze

A Poem by Michael Hof
"

Why are you afraid?

"
A whistling breeze
Floats through the crack in the window
That was caused by a ruckus evening long forgotten
By people who haven't been seen in years

Forgotten memories
Phantoms
Grasping at straws

The whistling breeze rolls through

Spine shivering
Goosebumps dimpling

Nightmares coarse through the consciousnesses
Layered thoughts collide in a horrible tangent of worse and worse images

A colorless rainbow
A brutally overcast sky
A tree stands alone in a deserted field
Cypress

A creature perched
Claws glisten in the fleeting light
Bloodlust rampages through its red eyes

The darkness grows thicker
The air itself murky
The creature's lips curl
A smile?

The whistling breeze shoots up the leg
Causing a startle
Awaken
Afraid
Why?

Because of a whistling breeze?
