This was written on June 13th, 2002 as lyrics to a song. I have long since forgotten the beat it was written to, but I still have the chords. Amazing to think this was 11 years ago!
Even from the blackest night You call me back again Even from precarious height You call me back again
Even from the deepest sleep You drag me back again From the raptures of the deep You bring me back again
Because your love Has the force as it Falls Of a hundred thousand Niagra Falls
Even from the highest keep You break me back again Even from where I make you weep You bring me back again
You are my Niagra Deep underwater heart to you calls You are my Niagra My tender aching heart lulls
Because your love
Has the force as it Falls
Of a hundred thousand
Niagra Falls
You truly are very talented, my friend. This is beautiful. Perhaps I can convince you to sing this one day...in Santa Cruz!!!

I think this poem is sort of old and not very good, but I think it has promise and could be improved upon. I don't want to only post my best work though. This is what I was writing a decade ago when I was first starting. I wanted to include it so that I could hopefully show my progression toward my current writing style. I have stacks of notebooks with stuff like this in them. I haven't even begun to go through all of them...

Each piece you write is personal, it holds some significance to you and is worth expressing. Many perceive it differently than you...we are our own worse critics. You have show great progression, and are continuing to learn and grow from talented poets here. Keep writing and sharing, old and new, dear friend.

I can't see it as more than just a piece of my life. I don't know how it might be more or less deserving in many cases. I went to Niagra as a 13 year old boy, and it amazed me. I can remember standing at the top of the falls and realizing just wading out a little too far in that water would be the end of me...It was an odd feeling. Both terrifying and yet exhilarating. I do feel that even my old poems have something important to express, but I am not as fond of my way of expression back then as now. All the same, I am grateful that you can see something in this!

That is the beauty of words, we as poets capture these special moments, ones that hold such significant value to us, and we write about them. You are the only one who knows what you were feeling, and through your beautiful expression we as readers can share this experience with you. You bring out the emotion in me, which not all poets can do, and that is a gift, my friend. Everything you write has importance, there is something to express, so keep sharing your precious words. You may not be as fond of your expression back then, but that shows growth, and you are doing just that every single day, I see it, I feel it...so keep gaining confidence ... grab that guitar and come sing in Santa Cruz with the locals on the wharf :)

My writing poetry was in fact originally an attempt to be a better lyricist. I am a guitar player and guitar instructor as well. I write songs frequently, but I have never been quite comfortable with my lyrics...and strangely enough I STILL am not!! Poetry does not always translate to lyrics as easily as you might think! They really are different mediums and I seem to have a knack more for poetry than for lyrics, to my surprise and slight dismay. I have at least one song I have written on here, as an example of how my lyric differ from my poetry. The title is "Ring the Bell, Alexander." I am not sure it has really had many views. It is a very old poem/lyric of mine in that I wrote it eleven years ago -and within the space of about five minutes. Without hearing the music that goes to it, I am not sure it is easy enough to tell why I like it. As a poem it kind of stinks, but this is why I have tried to present it as one of my few lyrics here. It is a very hard song to play on guitar so I actually don't even play it myself as much as I would like to. If you would be so kind as to read it, then maybe you will understand where the protagonist fits into the storyline. Rarely do people get it.
I'm foolishly romantic. I like realism and surrealism in all different forms of art. I feel that when you can use reality to show your truth, then you have achieved the most powerful form of art pos.. more..
