RecalcitrantA Poem by Robert Tusitala O'NeillFrom a Different Perspective...
Midnight shadows
Black on black In the gathering darkness We plan our attack In the alley Sounds grating metal on flint A lighter's gleam lighting A desperate eye's glint A mutter of voices Flick of switchblade They're coming to get us How soon our hopes fade Hot blood on cold pavement Brick walls feel skulls crack A boot's kicking my face in But I'm not going back I take one cop's body To use as a shield And requisition his billy club To clear a way to the field Shots ring out loud And voices cut short But my gun has an answer And it's one sharp retort By morning 8 bodies Decorate a deserted street 3 cops and 5 escapees But at least I'm on my feet And I'll keep on running Long as I've got a plan 'Cuz a man without cunning Ain't got no claim on being a man And I'm steppin' outta darkness And I'm steppin' into light 'Cuz the one thing I ever learned Is freedom's worth the fight! © 2014 Robert Tusitala O'NeillAuthor's Note
