Thru My Avatar's Eyes

Thru My Avatar's Eyes

A Poem by Jayna Burch

Thru My Avatars Eyes

What can we learn about ourselves
When  we are not who we appear to be?
When the normal limitations in life
do not exist.
One would think that it's our personality that survives...
but is it?
When we can be free of personal judgements
and society's norms.
Are we who we really think we are?

Who looks back at me
When standing face to face
looking into my avatars eyes?
Is it the real me,
The me I want to be,
or the part of my I ususally hide?
Is it possible to learn about me - thru her?

Sometimes I feel like Alice
thru the looking glass
living in a world that's upside down.
In some ways she is the opposit me...
in looks this is most true,
But who she is, her personality and actions
should just be me as I am in control.
So, is she me upside down...
or a truer reflection of me?

Why do we all gather in a make believe place?
So the wallflower can be popular....
so the shy can be outrageous....
so the single can have a family....
so those confined can feel free in the dance...
or so the organized, scheduled and most serious of us
can find the fun in the last minute spontanous activities?

Consequences - here there seem to be none,
So we are free to do what we want to do.
But is this really true?
It's just a game I tell myself
and once really thought that true.
But behind every avi is not a game engin...
but real people who play and laugh and hurt....
And I am one of them.

So who looks back at me
When looking in my avatars eyes?
A young girl who needs to grow up
and needs to realize that these are not  her toys.
Someone with a lot to learn
and needs to play with care...
for the next toy that may get broken
is me...
or may be someone that I care for.

Hermionesoul, its been awhile since I've something here that has touched me like this piece with is honesty and compassion. This is wonderful, and sad, both at the same time. It's the way of the new world we live in, this one of disguise, and make believe. There is much to appreciate in the virtual world, but much to be cautious of as well. Absolutely loved this, and will save it most definately.

Thank you for sharing your unique insights with us, I'm glad I got to read this.

A outstanding poem. Your story was amazing. The question of growing up and understanding what we want to be. Feelings and disappointment can't be dodged in a life. A excellent poem.

Love, love, love it. I feel this way sometimes which, in my eyes, is why I view this poem as beautiful. I didn't notice any flaws, if there were any. I love the structure and scheme and the way you explain they way you feel. Good Job, you've made my poems look like crap(:
