The Tree

The Tree

A Poem by Helen Crutchett

The Tree

I chanced upon you one fateful day
bathed in your glory for the whole world to see.
The plunder all around you left you unfazed.
As thunderous sounds of trees falling down
cut through the air you stood your ground.

Your magnificent branches lifting up to the sky
like a prayer towards heaven, I stood in awe.
Did you feel sorrow when the others
were felled, to make way for the buildings
where people would dwell?

There was something about you
so proud and serene
defying man's uncaring and greed.
Oh, most beautiful tree
may you always stand tall
to welcome the birds to their nests
and give them sweet rest.

there are just too many buildings...the wide open spaces are closing...nature infringed upon.
Pretty soon everything will be like what I experienced as a kid in the Bronx.
One tree per block...nothing but concrete and buildings rising to kiss the sky.
Why couldn't we all be like the Native Americans who knew how to live with the land...got what they needed from it, but also nurtured it ...we with our technology are taking away the beautiful homes of the birds...where is the sweet rest? They need it back.

It truly looks a magnificent tree

Trees felled - good ground tarmaced to make a car park
Childrens playground demolished to build a pub

To watch trees being felled to make way for housing or other is quite heart breaking. Call me a softie, but a felled tree can make me cry. I am in awe of their beauty and your poem does justice to them. Lovely work.

My son and I were laying under a big, shady tree in my profile picture.
I love your poem!

Gee
Working in construction this is a familiar tale as all is felled, torn from the ground to make way for more bricks and mortar. Thoughts these days given to newts and bats !
Good morning. Enjoyed the read
