Stage Fright

Stage Fright

A Poem by Helen Crutchett

Stage Fright

I, too, am a player in this strange play of life

On a stage too big for my comfort

A sea of faces making up the audience

Some have left their mark as they played their

Part so well

Who could forget them?

Grand players all…

Some have been so forgettable I have pushed

Them into the alcove of my mind and lost

Them forever in oblivion

Some I am forced to remember from time to time

As one cannot forget their role played to perfection

With such a dramatic effect as to leave me

Lost for words and frozen with

Stage fright ~

I see how you refer 'play' to the narrator's actual life. Living his /her role, meeting other 'actors' along the way. Of course some 'actors' are easier to remember than others, they being the ones you care more for, those who've played a significant part in your skit, helping you mold your character during the live play. The world is the stage, and you are just one individual, not everyone will be remembered. I liked your piece, good job.

Life is a stage... and the characters be... one and all... do we carry on to the delights of our path... or do we not take flight and hinder in fright... I say carry on... carry on... the night is still young... and many more must be presented tonight... I just had to ramble... sorry... but this is a good one... and I liked the theme...

Oh so true. We are all on a stage of some sort and we all experience situations where we feel intimidated and just don't perform well. But you said it so beautifully.

All the world is a stage, and we are often forced to play a part we are not suited for, or perhaps one we have not chosen, but it has chosen us as the star, instead of one for the minor part, and then there is the audience who can be so critical, and the orchestra who is ready to clang the cymbals when we perform in a grand way.

Your analogy of a performer who is one who must perform on the stage of life is interesting!
I think we like it best when we are summoned for yet one more curtain call for a role larger than life!!
Excellent write my friend!

The second stanza... let or left? and the line "Who could not forget them?" - "not" really fit your thought flow?

I followed your thought and understood (I think) your intent.

This is fantastic. I was expecting a poem about your stage fright before you performed in a musical or something but what I read was a poem about life. No kidding life is a stage too big for comfort. The last stanza was hauntingly beautiful. Great job!

Brian,

Thank you for the wonderful review. Much appreciated!

A beautiful analogy of life itself and the people we meet, the ones who affect our lives happily and those who don't so much. I like how some of these memories played to stagefright. Very nice.

Thank you dear poet. I appreciate you.

I liked the way you've used the philosophy of the world being a stage with 'stage fright'. Some players prove to be more effective on this stage as they play their role strongly, and so are they remembered more than others. Some are just forgotten very easily. This concept can have many aspects, for one, it is not only what role has been assigned to us on this stage of life, but how well do we act. Sometimes this stage becomes all about showing than being, and some players who are better considering role and soul are forgotten because they couldn't frame their act better, because of stage fright perhaps, your poem is very thought provoking.
