Prologue

A Chapter by haylx061007

The somber song of the bugle blared. Tears streamed down my cheeks as the two Military men clicked their heels and ran their hands over the honorable fabric. Married by eighteen, and widowed by twenty one. As the Taps played in the background, I could only think of our wedding day. The middle of November, married in a small chapel on the hill. Smack dap in the middle of New England. Hot Cocoa was served during the reception, since neither of us were old enough to drink. We met each other in high school, Levi and I. I guess you could say we were high school sweethearts. The summer after our senior year, he proposed. Our engagement lasted a few months before we made it official. From then on out, I would be Grace Myers, and I would carry that name with pride. Levi and I did everything together. We were so incredible in love, and now I'm left to love a ghost.

Taps came to an end, and the men began to lower his casket into the ground. Black shades hide many of the eyes around us. Hands clasped and standing tall, many of his fellow Airmen were trying not to break down. Friends and family sobbed as everyone shared stories over Levi's grave site. Speeches started with "I remember when", "This one time, when we were kids", and "Levi was always…unique." Laughs and tears were shared among the remorseful group of people. Then it was my turn.

"Levi…we knew this day would come, but we never thought it would come so early. We were suppose to grow old together, have beautiful children, and grandchildren. Now what am I suppose to do without you? Levi you were my soul mate, my sweetheart, and my best friend. You always pushed me to follow my heart, and although the Air Force kept us apart, you always knew just what I should do. Levi I want you to know I've saved every letter, and every picture you have ever sent me while away."

I could feel everyone's eyes locked on me in confusions. To them, this was supposed to be a story of what Levi was like, how much I loved him and how much we would all miss him. But to me, this was the last time I would get to speak to Levi, and I did just that.

"Levi, I love you and always will. It's still me and you baby, always has been and always will be."

And that was it. It was over, Levi was gone. One by one people paid their last respects and walked back to their cars. Soldiers gave their condolences and placed Levi's flag in my hands. This was it, it was time to say goodbye.
