Humble Company

Humble Company

A Poem by Hayley

Any relic of the dead is precious, if they were valued living.

-Emily Bronte

If a soft light fell on my desk with the humble company of a poem

I could claim a peace of mind

And beautiful friends who stuck their heads in ovens

And starved until the next season in a window-ridden asylum

Humid pale and unborn

I know they thumbed their existence with typewritten fingers,

A restless grace similar to a drunken shiver,

And I should let lie what is gone and dead

But I feel them in my bones

Yes the influence of minds on other minds, it' s quite delightful really. But you have to wonder, their is a certain perversity of their legacy, the suicide martyrs, the dramatic types who let mental illness creep in.

To imitate that would be silly right? Nice to see you around Haley.

I didn't quite understand the "you" in the last line. If "they" typed their way into existence, shouldn't you feel "them" in your bones?

Otherwise, I loved your nimble thought. Especially the three lines in the middle. I kind of felt the last three lines in the first stanza are auxiliary to the poem. Of course, it's your choice to have it there, but I didn't get how it contributes the main theme. Perhaps I'm simply misreading it all here.

A great piece, nevertheless. Keep writing.

Wow, so gracefully penned.

I think a line you already have written describes this poem as a whole- a restless grace similar to a drunken shiver.

You have created such a wonderous piece of ghostly beauty.

Wow. Also, Emily Bronte is brilliant. I like that in English we are supposed to speak of the author's work in the present tense (e.g. Emily Bronte writes...). It kind of gives us the feeling that the artist does live on through the legacy.

The quote and the poem is amazing. The poem open the door to a good discussion. I believe people who were part of our life. When they are gone. Their words and face are part of us always. I like the ending to the outstanding poem.
