Spy preperation

Spy preperation

A Chapter by Bailee Topil

Beep, beep, beep”. I roll over on my bed and slap the alarm clock on my desk to shut it off. I lay on my back for a moment to go through my thoughts. Today is Saturday. Alex asked Hannah about the book signing on Monday after school and it turns out that Steven Cross is one of her favorite authors so she said yes to Alex’s offer. Alex has been jittery all week long and hasn’t been able to focus on her school work. The girls and I, meaning Bri, Lucy, Jamie and myself, are going to spy on Alex and Hannah’s little date. It was Jamie’s idea to spy, “It’s to keep an eye on Alex and make sure this Hannah chick isn’t a jerk to her” Jamie explains. We all know that isn’t true, Jamie just want to try and show off her sneaking skills. I don’t want to go and spy on Alex but Bri said that it would be a fun experience and would get us all out of our houses.
I get up out of my bed and get dressed for the day. I put on a pair of blue jeans and a red t-shirt. I pull my dark brown hair into a high pony tail like I do every day. My bangs hang to the right side of my head but they are getting pretty long and start to cover my deep brown eye a little. I walk down the stairs to the kitchen where my mom is making pancakes and eggs while my younger brother sits with his eyes attached to his psp. “Good morning Katie, are you hungry?” My mom asks.
“No, not really” I reply. I walk to the cupboard to get a glass and then fill it with orange juice from the fridge
. “This isn’t like you Katie” my mom says concerned “are you feeling alright”.
“Yea I’m fine I just don’t want to go on that wild goose chase today”.
“Oh you mean spying on Alex and her date” my mom giggles. “Are you going to head over to Lucy’s in a little bit” she asks.
“Yea that’s what I planned” I answer. I gulp down the rest of my orange juice and grab my phone from its charger and my bag with some clothes in it I packed from last night.
“You guys are having a sleep over right; don’t forget to brush your teeth”.
“Ok, I will be back in the morning bye” I say behind me as I exit through the front door. Lucy lives about twenty blocks from my house so it doesn’t take me to long before I reach their front porch and knock on the door.
Lucy opens the door for me and I walk in to see Jamie and Bri already sitting on the couch waiting for me. “Took you long enough sports girl” Jamie teases.
“I would have come sooner but I didn’t understand why we had to come over at ten in the morning when the book signing isn’t until four in the afternoon”.
“Because dummy, we have to get on our disguises before we spy on Alex” Jamie explains.
“Why do we need disguises, we just need to hide is all”.
“That’s no fun” Lucy puts in “if we have disguises we don’t have to sneak around as much” Lucy says.
“If we were creeping around and trying to hide people would think something is up and that would catch Alex’s attention” Bri states.
"I guess there is no reason to argue about it if it’s three to one" I reply, "but I am not going to wear anything stupid".
"You don't have to worry” Bri tries to assure me” we won’t put you in anything stupid.
We all follow Lucy down stairs to go and get started on our disguises. When Lucy turns on the lights all you see are hundreds of clothes and costumes. Lucy's parents are clothe designers and they make costumes as a hobby. There basement is like a utopia for hard core shoppers. We start to rummage through all of the clothes when Bri says she spots something for me. I turn to see what it is and then I'm jumped on from behind and blindfolded.
"What are you guys doing” I yell.
"Just relax" says Jamie who seems to be on my left side.
"If we showed you what the costume was you wouldn't have put it on, so we are going to put it on you while you're blindfolded" explains Bri. I start to feel someone tugging on my shirt to try and take it off.
"Do we really need to undress me for this" I ask. I'm really self-conscious of my body so I tend to try and hide my self whenever I change.
"We are all friends here" Lucy says from behind me. "Can you lift up your arms for me" Lucy asks. I do as she says and lift my arms allowing her to take off my shirt. I cross my arms to cover up my bra and chest. I than feel my pants being unbuttoned and slide down my legs. I lift my legs out of my jeans as they are taken from my body. I am standing in the middle of the basement half naked, confused, and really self-conscious.
"Ok now lift your arms for me" Bri commands. I shakily lift my arms and I feel clothing being pulled over my half naked body. At first I just think it’s a shirt because it stops at my waist but then I feel that it’s pulled down and is now swaying around my legs.
“You guys are putting a dress on me” I say angrily, “you guys know I hate dresses”.
“That’s exactly why we blindfolded you dummy” Jamie replies.
“Can you just take of the blindfold already” I ask.
“Yea, yea” Jamie answers and unties the blindfold allowing me to see again. As soon as the blind fold goes off hands go over.
“Wait” Lucy demands “let’s get her in front of a mirror first so she can see herself before she tries to rip the dress off of her”.
“Good idea Lucy” Bri agrees. I feel my self being directed to my right and what feels like a new room because the floor has changes from carpet to stone. We stop and Lucy removes her hand from my eyes.
“Holy crap” I whisper to myself.
“Don’t you look amazing” Lucy says with a giant grin on her face. I do have to admit I don’t look half bad, but hell will freeze over before I tell them I think that. The dress has a light blue short sleeve button up shirt look to it. The bottom part of the dress is dark blue and goes to about the top of my knees.
“Now that you are in the dress, it’s time to put on the makeup and do your hair” Jamie says excitedly. Before I could open my mouth to reject I am being pulled into a chair and Jamie starts her magic. Jamie has always loved doing makeup and hair especially since I don’t’ wear any makeup and only wear ponytails.
As I sit in the chair waiting for Jamie to finish up with my face and hair Lucy and Bri also get on their disguises. Lucy is wearing a cute little yellow dress with a qrue neck and no sleeves. The dress goes to about the middle of her thighs. Her blond hair is tied up into a high pony and her bangs hang straight across her forehead. She is also wearing black sunglasses to hide her eyes so she doesn’t look so recognizable. I shift my eyes to try and see Bri and I am surprised at what she is wearing. “Bri, why the heck are you dressed as a guy”? Bri is wearing an open long sleeve blue plaid shirt with a dark grey shirt underneath. She has on baggy blue jeans with black converse. She has a dark brown shaggy looking wig on and some oval glasses to help her with her eye sight.
“We are also going to look like we are going on a dates. So Jamie and I are going to be dressing up like guys” Bri answers. I give Jamie a surprised look. I would never have thought that Jamie would want to dress up like the guy.
“Don’t look at me like that Katie” she says to my surprised face. “I’m doing it for Alex”.
“Sure you are” I say with a little tease.
Jamie stops messing with my hair and gives me a good look over. “Ok, you look pretty good right now”. “I am going to get my disguise on and then I will put on the finishing touches. Jamie walks off toward the clothing and puts together her disguise. As I wait I am tempted to look in the mirror and see what I look like. Jamie had taken out my pony tail and curled my hair with the curler just a little bit. I try to sneak a peak behind my shoulder when Lucy stands in my way and waves her finger.
“No peaking” she says. I turn my head back and slouch in my chair disappointed
Jamie returns and I am blown away at how different she looks. She is wearing a short blond wig with a messy look to it over her long light brown hair. The wig really makes her hazel eyes pop. She has a red hooded sweatshirt with an open black vest over it. She also has on some baggy blue jeans and a pair of black Jordan’s.
“Oh my god, you actually look like a guy Jamie” I tell her.
“Call me James” she replies with a deep voice. She gives off a big smile at her attempt to sound like a dude.
“Well James are you going to just stand there or are you going to finish up what you started over here”. I point to my face and hair indicating that I wanted this to be done and over with.
“Yea, yea I’m getting on it”.  Jamie walks over to me and continues her work. I wonder how different I will look. I rarely have my hair down and I never put on makeup. I just hope Jamie didn’t make me look like a clown or I’m going to give her a bruise on her arm. Jamie stand back and looks me over with a concentrated look on her face.
“There is something missing” Jamie finally concludes
“Your right” Bri answers. Bri puts her finger to her chin and tilts her head to the side. I look at them as they stare at me for the longest time.
“I got it” Lucy sings as she walks up behind me and places glasses on my face.
“I don’t need glasses” I tell Lucy.
“They are fake glasses, they are just used for decoration”.
“Ok” I answer “whatever you say”.
I am finally able to get up and walk in front of the full length mirror on the wall. At first I thought that someone else was standing in front of me, I didn’t recognize the person in the mirror. I was so amazed that my jaw dropped the moment I realized that it was me that I saw in the mirror. With my hair and makeup, along with these rectangular glasses make me look like I am eighteen years old. My dark brown hair has a slight curl to it, it dangles about two inches past my shoulder. The rectangular glasses really make me look older, that would explain why Bri looks a lot older than we do.
“You look so pretty Katie” Lucy squeals in joy.
“Yea you don’t look have bad” Jamie says, “but you wouldn’t look like without my help”. Jamie puts her hand to her ear waiting for a thank you from me. I roll my eyes at her and give her what she wants.
“Thank you Jamie” I mumble under my breath.
“See that didn’t hurt did it” Jamie replies.
“No it just burned like hell” I answer with a little giggle.
“Now for the final touches to your wardrobe” Bri yells from a walk in closes filled with shoes. “These will be perfect”. Bri turns and shows a pair of the two inch heels about the same blue color as the bottom of my dress.
“There is no way in hell I am going to were those, I will break my ankle.
“It just takes a little practice to get used to” Lucy answers “besides they will look amazing with the dress”. I take another look at the shoes and shrug. I take the heels from Bri and put them on. When I put them on I look at the clock to see that it’s almost three thirty.
“If we don’t hurry we are going to be late to the book signing” I tell the girls. They all look at the clock with shocked eyes.
“Looks like the time got away from us” Jamie states “We better hurry. We all start to get everything we need for our mission. We put in ear pieces and mics on our clothes to communicate with each other. We make sure we have what we need and then head to the book store where our mission to spy on Alex begins.
