A Chapter by Havatara

August 16, 1859

Dear Safiya,

That is an incredibly unsatisfying ending.  What happened when she got to America?  What was in the box?  You left too many loose ends.

Have you looked up Agnes yet?  She’s been asking me my answer, and I don’t want to do anything without your permission.  It’s funny that we’ve only been talking for two months, yet I’ve become so dependent on you.  Well?  What’s your answer?

No, I still haven’t talked to Duncan yet.  When I get up, he’s already in bed, and when he gets up, I’m either too busy doing chores or at Agnes’s house learning how to garden.  The last time I was there, she taught me how to water.  She’s been teaching me the names of different plants, and she said that as soon as I learn all of the names, she’s going to teach me what they can do in medicine.  I’m excited to learn.

And I haven’t seen Jaime yet, but he left me a note yesterday and said that he wants to meet me tomorrow so we can talk.  I’m kind of nervous about it, but it’s probably not going to be anything.

The MacJohns have been normal for them.  Cindy has been angry with me for going over to Agnes’s every day when I could be doing chores, so I’ve been staying up late to try to get everything done.  Other than that, no, nothing interesting has happened.

Please answer my questions!  Did she ever meet Thomas again?  I know that wasn’t my grandfather, so what happened?

Sincerely, Lucy
