A Chapter by Havatara

August 14, 1859

Dear Safiya,

How can you just stop there?  Did he hit her?  What happened?  Please tell me!

Now that you’ve successfully distracted me, I can’t remember what I was planning on telling you.  Oh right!  I went to visit Agnes again yesterday. That’s why I didn’t write.  She kept me there all day, but Duncan and I have been so busy cleaning that we didn’t have much to do.

Anyway, I told her about where I live.  She asked, and so I had to tell her.  I told her that I basically live as a maid with the MacJohns.  She just sat there for a second, then asked, “Well, why don’t you leave?  I don’t see the point of staying so unhappy.”

I just shrugged.  “I have nowhere else to go.”

“Sure you do.  You can live with me.  Then maybe we’d get some meat on those bones, and you’d finally learn how to garden.  Besides, an old woman like me needs some help,” she pointed out.

“I’ll think about it,” was all I replied.

That’s the only interesting thing that happened, except she showed me how to plant seeds.

Now back to the story.  Frederick was the spy?  I liked him so much!  He was so nice and kind and sweet and Grandma liked him so much.  Please tell me that someone saves her.  I’ll die if I don’t find out soon.  Please, Safiya!  Please tell me soon!

Waiting anxiously, Lucy

Author's Note

Havatara
A short chapter to balance the long chapter before. Plus I've done a somewhat bad job of matching up the plots, but maybe that's a good thing. Constructive criticism is always welcome!
