A Chapter by Havatara

Dear Safiya,

My stomach is a bit better, but not much.  I really don’t know what to do!  I’ve lost even more weight, and I’m almost constantly sleeping.  Cindy is even pitying me and doesn’t yell at me as much, but I still have to do the same amount of chores.

Well, not really.  The guest has asked to help me, and I suggested the plan that you had told me.  He seemed to think it was a good idea, and he said that if I did the laundry and the cooking, he would do the rest.  He has been, and he’s been doing a very good job.  I’m lucky he’s here.  And he hasn’t exactly told us his name yet, but when I asked he said that I could call him Duncan.  I like the name, but he told me not to call him anything around the MacJohns, which I find very strange.  Oh well.  It’s better than nothing.

I went to see Jaime again today.  He was actually able to talk, and he asked me about my family.  I told him about my grandmother and how she was from Scotland, and he told me that his great-grandparents were from the mainland, but they spent some time in Scotland.  They also came to America shortly after she did, he said.

We talked for a really long time.  He had to walk me home, since it was getting dark.  On the porch he stopped and looked at me, and we almost - almost! - kissed.  It was so close!  He had even leaned forward and everything, but then Duncan was there and interrupted us.  He said he was looking for the broom and couldn’t find it.  Jaime left soon after that.  To say the least, I was very mad at Duncan, but he acted like he hadn’t done anything!

Wait, I thought that Grandma Julia liked Thomas.  Now she likes Fred now?  She really should have made up her mind!  Tell me soon what happens!  I can’t wait another minute.

Love, Lucy
