A Chapter by Havatara

July 29

Dear Safiya,

I am so sorry it took so long to write!  I was preparing for the dance and Cindy was just the devil himself in a woman’s body, but I’ll explain that later.  I must tell you about the dance.

It was in City Hall.  We had never done that before.  It’s usually in this small field by the library, but it was nice having it indoors for once.  Well, the Christmas play is in the dance studio, but that’s usually cramped.  Anyway, it was so pretty there!  There were so many lights all around the place, and my dress was amazing.

Jaime met me there.  I wished that he could have picked me up in his carriage so I didn’t have to walk, but he had to go into town to do some shopping and went straight from the stores to the dance.  No matter.  It was a pleasant evening anyway.

After the dance, I got Cindy’s permission to stay at Jaime’s house for the night.  Cindy said it was okay, as long as I did all of my chores as soon as I got back.

I told Jaime’s mother about how I wasn’t feeling well.  She told me to just wait it out, and that there wasn’t much she could do for stomach bugs.  So for the entire time I was there I mainly ate just soup and bread and water.  The worst part is that I barely got to talk to Jaime at all.

I ended up staying there for two days.  When I got back home, Cindy made me do all of the chores that I would have done if I hadn’t been gone.  I’m just glad that our guest can clean up after himself.  His room is always spick and span, and we have the same amount of dishes as before he came, maybe even a little less.  I wonder if he would help me with the chores at all.  But he’s so strange that I’d really rather not ask.

So who’s the spy?  Does Grandmother ever find out who the spy was, or does he or she slip away before anyone finds out?  Please write back soon!

Love, Lucy
