A Chapter by Havatara

July 9, 1859

Dear Lucy,

I never said that you planned on marrying him.  It may just be dangerous for you to be with him is all that I’m saying.

You should make something with chocolate as well.  If you don’t get this letter in time, then what you’re preparing is good enough.  Julia would have been proud.  She hated cooking, and avoided it like the plague.

Now let me continue on with the story.  They stopped at the sea because in the harbor the trail stopped.  It is difficult to follow the trail of a boat, especially with the sea always changing with the tide and the waves.

Thomas and Julia stayed in an inn for a few nights, and then Thomas said to Julia one morning, ‘I have a friend that lives in this city.  He will let us stay with him for a while so we can look for your uncle’s trail.  How does that sound?’

Julia replied, ‘Is this friend of yours nice?’  Thomas just laughed and started to gather his things, for it was well into the morning and they were just leaving anyway.  After they checked out of the inn Thomas and Julia rode down to the waterfront, where there was a fine mansion.

‘Is that where your friend lives?’ Julia asked incredulously.  Thomas smiled and nodded.  He had always been a quiet boy, but in the city he seemed a bit more quiet than usual.

Two grooms and a butler came to greet them.  They all bowed and murmured ‘Master Thomas’ before they carried on their duties.  When Julia was to be escorted to the servant’s rooms, Thomas said, ‘She is a friend of mine, not a servant.  She is to stay with me.’  They nodded and let her go.

She followed Thomas through many beautiful halls and up many majestic staircases before they came to their final destination, a small study packed absolutely full of books.

Thomas knocked in a special seven-knock sequence before he opened the door.  A man with slightly grey hair and laughing brown eyes was waiting for them.  He looked up from his book and said, ‘Ah, Thomas.  Good to see you, lad.  How are things up your way?’

‘They’re good, Jones,’ Thomas replied simply, sitting down.  He gestured for Julia to do the same, so she chose a rickety old chair in a shadowy corner of the room, hoping that she would be ignored.  The man, Jones, scared her.

‘So, why are you here this time?  Looking for a crystal or the family of the prophecy?’ Jones asked.  Julia stayed quiet, though she was terribly confused.

‘I’m looking for someone, though it’s not the family of the prophecy,’ Thomas replied shortly.  Jones laughed.  ‘You never did like work, so I don’t know why you left your home to work?’  ‘I have my part in the prophecy as well.’

The rest of the conversation is not worth mentioning, for it involves more prophecy nonsense that didn’t make any sense to Julia, so it wouldn’t make any sense to you, either.

That seems like a good place to stop.  The next part is really exciting, and I don’t want you to be thinking about it at the dinner.

Tell me everything that happened during the dinner, too.  I want to know it all.

Sincerely, Safiya
