Part XIV

A Chapter by Haunzwürthe

The Chief was red faced and he stood, arms folded, snickering to himself.  Everyone else had varying expressions of disbelief and confusion.  Avery sighed and talked towards the monitors.
"Every file I've listened to so far has been this dry, void of any emotion, but with commitment and resolution.  He talks like he knows he is right but has to prove it.  There are-"
"You mean to tell me that we spending our Saturday in a shithole apartment in desperate need of a tetanus shot all because some grown up nerd with the hots for ET decides he's gonna build this elaborate Circuit City wet dream to prove it?"  The Chief was trying not to laugh as he talked but he was just as much aggravated as he was amused.   "Mars Attacks was more believable than this crap.  I want anything I can use.  I'm not interested in Area 51 baloney."
Avery continued annoyingly, "There are years of audio files here, thousands, almost one for everyday from what I can tell.  He's talked everything from solar efficiency, energy conversion, long range data transmission, miss displacement, and even a concept he calls mass replacement.  This isn't the kind of guy you find at Comicon, Chief.  For instance, Professor, were the solar panels altered in any way?"
"Yeah, they were actually.  There appeared to be some sort of focusing and prism modification attached above each panel.  I suspected to increase output."
"You're right.  Generally, solar panels convert roughly 15% of natural sunlight into energy because the photovoltaic cells only convert white light.  That by itself wouldn't be enough to offset power use from the city grid to keep out of sight.  PECO would have noticed by now.  He says that by utilizing all colors of the visible spectrum and focusing each color on cells altered to convert that specific range of the color spectrum, he increased electrical out put to 65%.  Even experimental photovoltaic cells don't breach the 50% mark.  We're not even talking about the invisible spectrum.  He barely pulls from the city grids running that kind of setup.  This is simple compared to what he gets into later on."
"I've heard enough and I need an aspirin," the Chief interjected.  "This is my take on it.  We put out an APB for Rick Moranis in a Ghostbuster getup, high-stepping it to Roswell, New Mexico in order to cut holes into fences of government property because he thinks there are little three fingered space weasels out there and he wants to be his own Stephen Spielberg.   The confiscation of this equipment should pay for the fine to the bridge and this whole thing will be settled.  I will not go back to precinct with a s**t story like this."
"You don't understand Chief," responded McCabe.  "Whether or not there is criminal activity here is a moot point now.  There are technological advancements here that have been pure conjecture up until now.  I hate to admit it, but this guy would take my job in a heartbeat.  I would like to find him just to shake his and and get an autograph.  But the problem is, there are very few, if any people in America, much less the world, that can decipher the code he has used, if it is indeed a new language.  The technology by itself is out of our league.  Your best bet would be to call the FBI and have them take a look at it.  Maybe they get something we missed.  Avery, you have anything else before we finish up here??
"Generally speaking of the file-size alone, it appears that things didn't really take off until March of 2000.  The files up to there are fairly small.  Then they increase slowly until a fairly significant jump in 2002, another one in 2006 and generally hold steady from there.  So it's probably a safe assumption that the increase in file-size would indicate a breakthrough of sort with the smaller ones representative of no progress made or failure during that particular juncture.  This last one though is small, just like the first and it was made on the 13th of July.  Should I play it?"  There were no objections and Jarvis' voice came back through the speakers.
"If you have found these files before I have returned, someone must have actually taken the time to care about my well being, so thank you.  I have recorded everything I have done here down to every detail and most specifications where they were relevant.  I haven't stolen anything in this room.  Everything was purchased or acquired legally through legitimate sources.  Today is the culmination of over 16 years of research, experiments, failures, expulsion, and second chances.  Whether you believe I have successfully made contact with extraterrestrial life entirely is up to you.  But know that should this experiment work as well as it did with the prototype on the desk, you will see for yourself soon enough.  If this fails, as the other option to success is total destruction, this equipment should be carefully placed in competent hands, as everything is in working condition at the time of my departure.  To those at MIT who dismissed my theories and mocked my efforts, I told you so.  To the rest of the world, I'll see you shortly.  If you're wondering how I will get back to Earth, don't.  You'll know it when it happens."
