Part VI

Part VI

A Chapter by Haunzwürthe

She was late.  No, she wasn't coming.  Had she forgotten?  Jarvis paced the room, a marked improvement from the shambles he took over.  He hadn't really planned for anything beyond the feeble attempt at dinner that was waiting on the stove.  Baked chicken and macaroni, not a four course meal, but nicer than he had been living on for the past few weeks.  He heard the elevator grind to a halt and he almost forgot to breathe.  No one really used it anymore so it must be her.  The footsteps came down the hall and stopped in front of the door.  After a soft knock, he opened to see her standing there, slightly shocked that she had shown up at all.
"Hi."  He stood back offering her to come in.  She stood outside looking in and responded by putting her hand over her mouth.  Her eyes were wide as she looked around the room stopping at the boxes and crates that had been converted into a dinette, the only furniture in the room.  Her cheeks rose and he realized she was hiding a smile.  A choked giggle uncovered the laugh she was hiding.  She looked back at Jarvis and with a slight shake of her head, walked back down the hall.  A cackle escaped as she went down the stairs.  Jarvis pursed his lips and let out a long sigh.  He closed the door with a soft click and wasn't seen again for the rest of the night.
