A Night at the Drive-In

A Night at the Drive-In

A Poem by Haunzwürthe
"

I loved going to the drive-in in San Diego. There is no other experience to compare it to.

"

As the dust settles in
the shadows begin
to gather and grow on the ground.

A cool summer breeze
floats through in ease
and whispers its rumors around.

They arrive in droves
and park in the rows
angled at the white billboard screen

The children run playing
anticipating
the feature yet to be seen.

The concession line grows
as its bounty bestows
the perfume throughout in the air.

The sodas get topped
the kettlecorn pops
as people return with their ware.

The night wanders down
as twinkles abound
while the masses settle in.

Cars blow their horns
patience now worn
waiting for the show to begin.

Then the billboard ignites,
the projector's light,
for this evening's masterpiece.

The sound though it saves
for radio waves
and all activities cease.

The title appears
midst laughter and tears
as heroes and villians are cast.

The plot thickens still
with horror and thrill
while battles are fought to the last.

The end closes near
the hero is feared
to have failed to save the world

Then one last bout
with the villainous devout
and the hero escapes with the girl

The patrons subdued
their emotions glued
and staring eyes entranced.

The victors rejoice
and the narrator's voice
ends this Hollywood dance.

The credits compile
cars start to file
out of this evening's site.

To their houses unknown
children in tow
eventually lost to the night.

The last vehicle leaves
the projector recedes
its continuous stare from the screen

This drive-in sensation
anticipation
for tomorrow's nightly scene.

I like this! Way to capture the essentials of a drive-in, I felt as if I was there. Great read
