Drums

Drums

A Poem by Hasan Hersi

Tick tock tick tock the clock goes steadily drowning out my thoughts
Sweating I try and concentrate on my usual haunts
Fists clenched I try and ignore the slow ticking of the clock
It was as if time with all its splendor was mocking me so i try to block
Beat by beat i hear it, the drumming of the universe or is it my heart
Dum dum dum dum it beats around me poisoning my being like a poison dart
I put my hands on my ears trying to block the beating but it grows with every erratic breath i take
I fall of my chair and hit my head on the floor trying to get this steady drumming to become fake
Dum dum dum dum it steadies and becomes a sort of rhythm and slowly fades into my soul
But its still there beating with a quiet intensity threatening to consume me whole
I get up and wipe the sweat off my face with a faint smile relieved it had gone
DUM DUM DUM DUM it attacks every fibre of my being tearing my sanity as well as every bone
Then silence, nothing moves and nothing makes a sound, the whole world has become silent
Dum dum dum dum is all I hear, finally my mind has bent.
