The Space for the Supposed

The Space for the Supposed

A Poem by Charles Chukwuani

what if the identities of the world
don't fit you?

like tight clothes forced on the big boned
because you're supposed to be thin
or a frown on a pretty face
because you're supposed to smile and grin?

what if it's bigger than that?

like a ding a ling
on a woman named Joan that loves to sing?

but nobody knows the true Joan
the voice that hits pitches high as the aves in the sky
since she hides it behind a low baritone
because she's supposed to be a guy.

and everyone calls her Joe
her idea
because if you aren't who you're supposed to be
then they haunt you
they rape you
they beat you
they kill you
you're wild game
on an Earth where humans hunt humans
but think themselves above animals that do the same.

I wonder
in what space are we allowed to exist?
those that are supposed to be
but are not.
