Lazarus

Lazarus

A Poem by Charles Chukwuani

Your love burned with the intensity of a thousand
leeches,
slithering and sucking my shriveled soul,
leaving me dryer than the Saharan,
so lost was I in the sandy depths
the heated hellish torment
of your love,
like a witch on a stake watching the tendril turn
into a flicker of flame,
into a conflagration,
but like the witch after the screams settle,
I welcome the pain
awaiting the final escape,
but in your cruelty
you provide just enough respite
to this rich man,
you dip your finger into your heart
and quench my thirst for love
with just one drop,
leaving me gazing up at you,
deceived into thinking
that I could reach heaven too.
