SerendipityA Poem by Charles ChukwuaniTo think it was naught but chance, that I was able to lay eyes on thee, perhaps I was struck through the heartby fate's lance, in that momentous serendipity. It was some day in a certain November, when the wind blew ever so harshly, that it wrenched from your hand a single paper, the genesis of our serendipity. My eyes then just happened to linger, upon said paper floating freely, and as I reached out and grasped it with each tightening finger, I unknowingly created serendipity. Returning it to you I was lost in wonder, how could this exist, this kind of beauty? "I think I love you", foolishly blurting out thoughts I solely meant to ponder, oh such silly serendipity! "You know nothing of love" you said, in pretentiously haughty maturity, and as I watched you walk away my heart sank as if it were made of dense lead, thinking I had ruined serendipity. The rest of it all now seems such a blur, had I known then I had just met the girl I'd marry, I would have kissed the paper you left in my hand with such fervor, and thanked the gods for serendipity! Now you soar with winged cherubs above, and though my aging mind is starting to fail me, I can surely say now I know at least one thing about love, that I somehow knew on that day of serendipity. As surely as French will be spoken in France, as surely as sky continues to stand above sea, as surely as healthy horses when spurred must prance, so too will my heart always beat for thee.
