To Love a StarA Poem by Charles ChukwuaniThe woman I loved blinded me, with her utterly brilliant glare, every smile was a solar flare, when she spoke her words alone inspired genesis, she was whiter than the whitest dwarf, and redder than the reddest giant, the strongest swirling creations of darkness dared not attempt to suck in her light, every blink was a momentary eclipse from omnipotent eyes, eyes that could make my entire body volcanic, and then reduce me to mere ashes.
She was craved by all the gods and envied by all the goddesses, Zeus ached for her more than any other, even Aphrodite looked upon her with jealousy, for them she held nothing but a lion's disdain to a sheep, her attention they could not claim, her gaze lingered only on me, the me that would provide anything she could ask, only wanting in return to continue to bask in her incandescent warmth, to continue melting into her ferocious heat, to continue to be touched by her fingers, fingers that played sonatas on my skin, and carved the notes into my back.
She had found me in such darkness that she became my only light, leading me to commit an act fatal to love: to make her my only reason to live, my heart beat so strongly for her that I thought Venus must give up her crown for surely I had the brightest of all stars, and Saturn must give up one of his rings, for I had found a better use for it's gleam, perhaps it would have been better for me, to have never loved a star, then perhaps maybe, the supernova would have left something behind, but nothing remained of me, oh, to love a star is such folly. © 2014 Charles Chukwuani |
