Rhyming with OrangeA Poem by Charles Chukwuani
It usually happens by accident,
Or one finds out about it through the poetic grapevine, But invariably we all come across the anomaly in rhyme, That is orange. I was writing about a woman's beauty, And to do her justice I had so attempted to compare, Her radiance with that of a scorching sun's glare, Yet alas, I would describe the sun in a fateful sentence, That ended with the word orange, ORANGE, F*****g orange, A color, A fruit, Sowing its seeds of frustration in the mind, The clock ticked on as I spent an incredible amount of time, Trying to find a single rhyme, With orange, Choosing only to rhyme with itself, A pseudo prime word, It forces you to cut your lines short just to fit in a rhyme, Like I did above with time, Stupid orange, To think a complex existence such as myself, With all my billions of cells in activity in my cerebral cortex, Would be defeated by a mere word of human construct, How silly, This orange, Dorange? Storage, No, Storange? Rifling through dictionaries at a rapid pace, Then there is always that deceiving epiphany, When one thinks 'range' rhymes with 'orange', And is prepared to stupidly gloat to all those that came before, That had been equally dumbfounded by this problem, That one had found such a simple solution, But Occam's Razor comes crashing down, As one mouths the words over and over again, And realizes that in fact, 'Range' does not rhyme with 'orange', In no manner of pronunciation or proper diction. So from all writers that came previously, And all writers that will undoubtedly come to thee, I wish to say, F**k you, Orange.
