Oedipus

Oedipus

A Poem by Charles Chukwuani

to draw a parallel to a sunset would not do her beauty justice
soft skin with the scent of cocoa and butter
dark hair
the length akin to Rapunzel
her smile could tame the wildest of beasts
and she showed it only to me
maybe that is what made him angry

always so angry
he was

when darkness fell and the moon came out to play
he would come tottering home
reeking of the thing Prohibition failed to destroy
she pretended to be asleep
snoring loudly
perhaps he saw right through her act
perhaps he did not care either way

never bothering to take off his rings
the b*****d
the brute
those screams resonated so loudly in my head
and I'd scream too
so I could block it all out
the sight of her pitiful and bloodied face

and one night
it seemed like she would not wake up

eyes seeing red
the rise and fall of his chest
indicative of a slumber
from which he would never awaken
regret is an emotion I have never felt
for slaying the vampire that craved her blood

she never leaves her room
claiming to not be able to live without him
but she will come around
after all
it is just the two of us now
together forever.
