What is Love?A Poem by Charles ChukwuaniWhat is this love that catches us so unaware, Akin to waking up in the middle of a dream, Without the slightest clue how we got there, Rendering us wary. What is this love that so overpowers all reason, Causing our hearts to erupt in screams, Drowning out the whispers of the mind, Rendering us powerless. What is this love that feels so blissfully pure, Like the bright sunlight creeping out after the rain, It illuminates the soul and quells its darkness, Rendering us lost in pleasure. What is this love that induces that dreaded doubt, That fear of losing what we have come to adore, Torturing the mind with the prospect of abandonment, Rendering us hopeless. What is this love that burns with scorching fire, The heart lit aflame by wicked betrayal, And it feels no amount of water shall ever quench it, Rendering us broken. What is this love that somehow manages to cure,
The same terrifying ailments that it also induced, With lessons learned and a strengthened heart, Rendering us able to love again. © 2013 Charles ChukwuaniFeatured Review
