Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven

A Chapter by Chris

The next few days went by pretty quickly. During the weekend, Greg spent the better part of his time hanging out with his friends. Sarah never mentioned anything about Kyle, which relieved Greg a little. He just wanted to be able to keep the memories of everything that had happened locked away in the back of his head so they wouldn't bother him. He wanted to be able to forget so he could just move on, but him forgetting about those painful times seemed nearly impossible.

It was now a Thursday. Homecoming was that Friday, resulting in a Spirit Week for the entire week. A lot of people showed a lot of school spirit by dressing up in whatever the theme happened to be for the day. Even Greg and his friends participated. Wednesday's theme was cowboys and Indians, and Greg decided to dress up as a cowboy. He wore a light blue button-up shirt tucked into a pair of light blue jeans, brown cowboy boots, and a white cowboy hat.

The first two classes went by pretty quickly for Greg. The days always did seem to go by quickly for him during Spirit Week. It was one of his favorite times of the year aside from the breaks that they got every so often. He liked having the ability of coming to school and wearing something wacky that would otherwise look a little too odd to wear normally during any other week of school.

When it was time for third period, Greg took his sweet time heading to Spanish. He always got a twinge of nervousness and anger every time he saw Kyle in the classroom, but it had gotten worse ever since Monday. The Junior male always tried to talk to him, but he luckily always somehow managed to avoid conversing with him. Since Kyle had been trying to do this every time they encountered in either the classroom or in the halls though, Greg didn't want to arrive at Spanish class too soon. The later he got there – before the bell rang, of course, because there was no way he would let himself be tardy – the less of a chance Kyle would be able to talk to him before class began.

Fortunately, Greg managed to step foot into the classroom a second before the bell rang. He sat down at his assigned seat before the teacher walked in. This class went by a little more slowly than the others. Spanish was his worst subject and he had no interest in it whatsoever. It seemed that not even Spirit Week was able to make the class roll by any quicker than what it normally did.

However, this was probably one of the worst Spanish classes out of the entire year for Greg. He noticed that Kyle continuously glanced at him every so often and it made him extremely uncomfortable. Even when he wasn't looking at the blond from the corner of his eyes, he could feel those gray eyes on him, which practically sent chills up his spine every time. It made it difficult for Greg to sit still in his chair and it was almost impossible for him to pay attention to whatever the teacher was talking about.

Near the end of class, everyone was set loose to do a worksheet to review the day's lesson. During this time, Greg noticed Kyle rising from his desk and walking in his general direction from the corner of his eye. The brown-haired boy shifted a bit in his chair, hoping that he was just going to the pencil sharpener or grabbing a tissue. However, that wasn't completely it: On his way by, Kyle dropped a crumpled up piece of paper on his desk. Greg felt a stab of fear in his heart as he stared at the paper as if it was a zombie. Hesitating at first, he slowly reached out and grabbed the paper and brought it underneath the desk. He opened it up and saw that there were words inside. It read:

i want to talk to you meet me after clas

Greg crumpled the paper back up and had a strong urge to throw it away from him as if it was the devil's words that were on that paper. He resisted the temptation though, and just set it at the corner of his desk for now, avoiding eye contact with the Junior boy as he passed him again.

Relief washed over Greg when the bell finally rang. He hurried and shoved his stuff into his backpack before walking hastily towards the door, leaving the horrid note behind. The Sophomore boy could have sworn that he felt Kyle trying to run up to him from behind—he could practically feel his breath on the back of his neck.

“Hey, wait up!” Greg could hear Kyle saying loudly from somewhere behind him as he walked down the hall.

Next thing he knew, he felt a hand grab onto his shoulder before spinning him around, his brown eyes meeting with those gray ones of Kyle's.

“I want to talk to you,” the older male stated.

“Sorry, but I have to get to my next class,” Greg said—almost in a single slur.

He turned around to try to walk off, but he was spun around again right afterwards.

“Why are you doing this?” Kyle questioned almost furiously.

“I'm not doing anything,” Greg lied, trying hard to hide the fear in his voice as he felt his heart racing. “M-my class is on the other side of the school, so I need to get going now so I don't get a tardy.”

“Don't f*****g lie to me!” Kyle spat venomously. “You've been f*****g avoiding me ever since that goddamn party!”

“Sorry, but I gotta go,” Greg slurred before turning around and jogging off, almost jumping out of his skin when he heard the Junior male slamming his fist into a locker.

Greg's heartbeat didn't start to calm until he reached his study hall class. He let himself fall into the chair next to Zach while letting out a quiet sigh. His hands were shaking a little and he felt as if he ran a mile.

        “You okay dude?” Zach asked.

        “Huh? Oh—err, yeah.”

        “You sure?”

        “Yeah, I'm fine.”

“Alright, whatever you say,” Zach said in disbelief.

Neither of the two said anything else afterwards for a few minutes. When Greg finally calmed down, a small smile came onto his face now as he looked towards the taller male, who was listening to his iPod as usual.

“You going to homecoming?” he asked.

“Nah, don't think I will,” replied Zach without taking his eyes off of his iPod as he searched through the list of songs to find the one he wanted to listen to. “Not really my thing. Don't really have a date to go with anyway.”

“You could just go with friends. That can always be fun. It's what I'm doing.”

“Nah dude, it just isn't really the same, ya know?”

Greg shrugged. “Yeah, I guess I can see what you mean.” An idea then struck him, which showed a little on his face. “I could hook you up with someone,” he suggested, offering a friendly smile as he did so.

Zach was a little surprised by what he heard and he looked at Greg for a moment to see if he was joking. He laughed a little. “No dude, it's cool. I don't really wanna go.”

        “Alright.”

Greg leaned over the side of his chair to get into his backpack so he could start his homework. Zach stared at the male—more than just simply staring. When Greg was beginning to upright himself in the chair, Zach looked down towards his iPod, smiling some. He had to admit, it was nice that Greg did make the offer. Just maybe he would change his mind about it. But of course, it would be with a bit of a difference than what Greg would probably expect. Not like he had to decide right now anyway. There were still a couple days until the dance.

When he arrived at the cafeteria, Greg took a seat at the table he and his friends sat at everyday during lunch. It wasn't too long until the other three joined him. All of them started to talk about random things. After about ten minutes though, their conversation drifted towards probably what was the most popular topic throughout the school: the homecoming dance. When this happened, Greg absentmindedly looked over towards Zach, thinking a little. However, his thoughts were broken by what Sarah next said.

        “Hey Kyle!”

Greg's head snapped to the side to look towards Kyle, who was standing between him and Sarah. His eyes widened some as if he was staring at a three-headed ferocious dragon and his heartbeat started to race.

“Hey,” he said. “Is it alright if I sit down?”

“Yeah sure, go ahead,” Sarah replied.

Kyle looked towards Heather and Andrew to make sure they didn't have any objections. No words of protest came from them, so he sat down. Greg shifted in his chair a little as he stared down at the table out of discomfort.

“I never knew you had this lunch,” Sarah stated a couple seconds later.

“I don't,” replied Kyle. “I usually have B lunch, but the teacher had a meeting with someone's parent, so I have this lunch today.”

        “Awesome,” said Sarah.

Greg shoved his half-eaten sandwich into his lunch bag before standing.

“Where you going Greg?” inquired Heather.

“To the library to work on a project,” he answered without making any eye contact with anyone.

“No, stay for a little longer,” said Sarah. “You still have a while before lunch ends.”

“No, I gotta get a book source for my research and that'll take a while,” replied Greg, glancing towards the others with just enough time to catch the subtle anger that was showing in Kyle's eyes.

Before anything else could be said, Greg walked away from the table and threw his trash into a trashcan on his way towards the doors. He told the teacher guarding the way out that he needed to go to the restroom; there was no way he would be able to go anywhere else without a pass. Greg was permitted to leave and he turned the corner outside of the cafeteria and down the hall. When he felt he was a good ways away from there, he let himself fall into a sitting position at the side of the hall, sighing as he rested the back of his head on the wall.

Greg spent the rest of lunch out there. When the bell rang, he headed to his sixth period class. Sarah came in a couple minutes later and sat down in her usual chair. Greg wasn't really too surprised by the conversation that was about to arise.

“So did you have fun doing research?” Sarah asked with a small giggle.

“Yeah, loads,” Greg replied a wee bit sarcastically before chuckling a little.

“You really should've stayed a little longer though,” said Sarah.

“Like I said, I had to find a book source,” he reminded her. “And it took like the entire time to find one that was good enough.”

“Oh,” Sarah said. “But I think Kyle wants to talk to you. He mentioned you several times when he was talking with us.” She let out a sort of excited gasp. “Maybe he wants you to go to homecoming with him? That would be so cool! You should definitely talk to him sometime.”

“Maybe,” Greg said, trying to hide the annoyance and anger that built up inside him.

Fortunately, the bell rang and Sarah didn't say anything else.

I believe I know why Greg doesn't want Kyle back. Then I read the title. Either Kyle cheated on him, or Greg's not strong enough to actually fight back against him. I should've thought of that so early.

Also, it seems you keep time skipping. It's not a problem, but I think there should've been a flashback when Greg had made it to study hall from what happened between those two moments.
