Chapter FiveA Chapter by Chris
The rest of the weekend went by pretty quickly. It was now Monday morning and Zach was walking through the halls, trying to go meet with his friends so he could talk with them a little before first period. As he navigated his way through the somewhat crowded halls, he looked around a little to try to find them. Unfortunately, they never went to the same place everyday, so it made it a lot harder to meet up with them in the morning. “Hey Zach.” Zach stopped and looked to his right to see Lisa standing there. “Hey,” he said, smiling a little, but the smile faded right afterwards when he noticed the somewhat upset look on her face. “Something wrong?” “Yeah, we need to talk,” she replied. Zach turned to face her completely now. “About what?” He was sure he already knew the answer to that question though. Lisa sighed before saying, “I don't really want to say it, I think we should just give up on our relationship. It's obviously not working. I mean, we keep trying to get back together again, but only to break up again. We should just try to find other people who we're more . . . compatible with.” The Junior boy slowly nodded and looked towards the floor for a second before looking back at her. “Sorry.” Lisa gave a small nod and gave a weak smile before turning around and walking off. Zach watched her for a moment before turning around also and beginning to walk away. He felt bad about this because he knew it was his fault. If he would've tried a little harder, this never would have happened. At the same time though, he felt as though it couldn't have worked out any better. He just couldn't really get that interested in Lisa, no matter how much he wanted to. The first few classes rolled by pretty slowly for Zach. His mind kept wandering to what happened this morning and he often lost focus. Whenever the teachers called on him, he would always be stuck with asking what the question was, or sometimes he wouldn't even hear them calling until they said his name for the third time. It was almost a surprise they didn't end up screaming at him for not paying attention, but it wasn't really like he could help it though. When Study Hall rolled around, Zach walked into the classroom. Surprisingly, he had actually gotten there earlier than Greg. He sat down at his usual seat and got out his MP3 player, hoping that listening to music would help him forget about the breakup for at least a little while. “Hey,” Greg greeted about a minute later as he sat down next to Zach. “Hey,” Zach said back, though in a somewhat quiet fashion. “Something wrong?” “No.” “You sure?” “Yeah, everything's great.” “It doesn't really look like it.” “Just shut up, alright?” Zach said angrily. Greg cringed a little from it and Zach noticed it. “Sorry,” he apologized. There was a brief pause. “Lisa broke up with me today.” “Oh, that sucks,” Greg replied. “Sorry to hear that.” Zach nodded, but he didn't say anything else as he looked down at the gray surface of his desk. “But she probably wasn't all that great, right?” he asked, offering a small smile. “You're probably too good for her anyway. You could probably find someone better.” Zach smiled a tiny bit and shrugged. “Maybe.” Greg tried to change the topic some to help get Zach's mind off of it, and it helped a lot. Zach started to feel a little better as the fact of the breakup went to the back of his mind for the time being. By the time class ended, he was in a bit of a better mood. © 2009 ChrisAuthor's Note
