Chapter Three

Chapter Three

A Chapter by Chris

“You guys ready yet?” asked a boy with light brown shoulder-length hair.

“Hold on!” yelled another boy, who was fidgeting with his guitar amp.

“Hurry up,” said the first boy a little impatiently. “We don't got all day you know.”

Zach sighed as he sat behind his drum set, waiting for his other two friends to get ready so they could practice. Like Nick had said, they didn't have all day. He had a date with Lisa later.

“Okay, ready,” said the boy who had been playing with the guitar amp.

“Okay, you ready Buck?” asked Nick as he looked over towards their bassist.

        “Yep,” replied Buck.

        “Good,” said Nick. “Now, 3, 2, 1 –”

        Zach's phone rang.

“Hello?” Zach said into it, ignoring the irritable groan Nick gave. “Sorry, I can't talk right now. Maybe later? Cool, see ya.”

        “Who was that?” asked Buck.

“Greg,” replied Zach as he slipped his cellphone back into his pocket.

“You mean the one that sat with us during lunch on the first day of school?” asked Nick.

        “Yeah.”

        “You know he's gay, right?”

A slightly surprised look appeared on Zach's face. “Really?”

“Yeah, he went out with Kyle before. You mean you didn't know that?”

“Hey, I don't keep track of what that a*****e does. But who cares if Greg's gay?”

“Just saying,” Nick said with a small smirk.

“Can we start now?” asked the lead guitarist in an irritable manner. “We don't got all day, remember?”

        “Shut up Steve,” replied Nick.

        They began practicing.

After a couple hours, Zach headed home to go get ready for his date with Lisa. He changed into some nicer-looking clothes before driving to her house. There was almost a part of him that just wanted to turn around and forget about the entire thing. He didn't even know for certain why he kept trying to go out with Lisa. They kept breaking up with each other anyway and if it hadn't worked before, certainly it wouldn't start to work now.

Zach didn't really know why, but he just couldn't get that interested in Lisa either. He liked her and he wanted to date her, but he just couldn't really get into it. Maybe he just wasn't ready to be committed to a relationship yet? Or maybe Lisa just wasn't his type? Or was there another reason?

His thoughts slowly drifted to Greg. He had to admit that he was a little surprised to learn that Greg was actually gay. He didn't really seem like it. But of course, it wasn't really any different from when he found out that Kyle was gay. He couldn't really see why Greg would want to date a low-life like Kyle though.

Zach coasted to a stop in front of a two-story house with light blue siding. He parked the car at the side of the road before walking up onto the porch and to the door. After knocking a few times, he stepped away from it a little and looked around some.

A few seconds later he heard the door opening and he looked towards it to see a girl the same age as him with long brown hair and green eyes stepping out of it. She wore a short jean skirt and a black sleeveless top.

        “Hey,” Zach greeted her.

“Hi,” Lisa said, smiling up at him.

“You look nice,” Zach complimented her, smiling a little.

        “Thanks.”

“So are you ready to go?”

        “Yeah.”

They got into the car before driving off. Neither of them said too much during the entire ride to the movies, making the ride awkwardly silent and almost painstakingly slow for the both of them. When they got to the cinema, they got out of the car and headed inside. After buying their tickets and snacks, they headed to the theater where their movie was going to play.

During the movie, Lisa glanced nervously at Zach every so often, who was eating the remainder of their popcorn. She spotted the hand that was resting on the armrest and she moved her hand over toward it to lay it on his. Zach looked towards her upon the touch and gave her a half-hearted smile before grabbing onto her hand.

The grip was loose though. Zach didn't know it, but Lisa knew that he wasn't really feeling too comfortable about this. She sighed before looking towards the screen, but she didn't really pay attention to what was happening.

When the movie was over, they headed out to the car. Lisa stepped in front of Zach when they reached the driver's side of it to look up at him, smiling some.

“I had fun tonight,” she said, even though it was very much a lie.

“I did too,” Zach replied, his not much of a truth than Lisa's.

They looked at each other a couple seconds before Lisa reached up to plant a kiss on those somewhat thick lips of his. She tried to do it passionately, but Zach pulled away a little and so she stopped before looking towards the side, a little upset. Not saying another word, she went over to the other side of the car a couple seconds later.

During the entire car ride back, they didn't say a single word to each other. It seemed twice as long of a drive than it did when they were going to the movies. When they reached Lisa's house, Zach stopped the car in front of it.

“Bye,” Zach said as he watched her unbuckle her seatbelt.

“Bye,” Lisa replied dryly as she got out of the car.

Zach watched her until she entered her home before sighing and driving to his house.

Is the dialogue believable enough? It isn't forced, is it (mainly the bit at the beginning)?

So, I was reading this chapter and it makes me wonder if Zach is questioning his sexual identity, and if he's been questioning throughout his relationship with Lisa. I'll keep reading and see if I'm right. This is well written and it doesn't feel forced at all. Keep up the good work.

ABOUT THE BEGINING DIALOUGE ("Good," said Nick. "Now, 3, 2, 1 ") ITS MORE USED AS "AND A 1,2,3" OTHER THAN THAT ITS BELIEVABLE. OH AND I SAW A TYPO (She spotted the hand that was resting on the armrest and she moved her hand over toward it to lay it on of his.) THE ON OF HIS DIDN'T MAKE SINCE.
