![]() Chapter 19A Chapter by Chris
When I woke up, my body felt stiff and I felt empty inside—like my soul had left me. If I even had a soul to begin with that is. . . Sighing, I got up to sit at the edge of my bed. I slowly looked around the room until my eyes came to rest on the Bionicles toy that laid on the floor. I got up from the bed and walked over to pick up the pieces. Tears started to well up in my eyes. . . It was then when my view on the entire situation seemed to change completely. My heart stopped from it and I dropped the toy back onto the floor as I froze in place for a moment. I was doing this all wrong. I wanted – no, I needed him to stay. I snapped my head in the direction of my alarm clock. It said it was only eleven o'clock. There was an hour left before Jack's plane would depart. Maybe there was a chance to set this right? Not wanting to waste anytime, I rushed out into the living room and peered down the street from the front door. The car was gone. “Is something wrong?” Mom asked me. “Yeah, there is,” I replied hurriedly as I turned around to look at her. “I need you take me to the airport!” “What?” she asked as if I was insane. “Why?” “Just do it!” I shouted. It was probably the only time I actually shouted at her like that. “Please!” I begged. After giving it a few second's thought, she finally agreed. We got into the car and pulled out of the driveway before driving up the road. I wished she would go faster, but there was no way she would do that, no matter how much I would have pleaded. She talked the entire time, but I never caught a single word she said. When we finally got to the airport, I quickly told her I'd be back before slamming the car door shut. I sprinted to the airport, hoping that there was still time. . . And there I was, running through the airport like a maniac with tears streaming down my face. It almost felt like one of those dreams where you ran down the hallway to get to the door that only seemed to get further and further away. I wished I could just freeze time. After several more slow, agonizing seconds, I finally came to the section of the airport where everyone would be boarding the plane to Atlanta. My heart stopped as I watched Jack walking to board the plane. “No, wait!” I cried. But it was too late. He was gone. © 2009 Chris |
