Chapter 19: BetrayalA Chapter by Chris
A few weeks passed since Skylar returned to Wildtree. Ever since that day, the blond had been in search of the dark-haired boy. He had been looking everywhere in the southern part of the continent, hoping he would finally find Spike. However, he hasn't had a single bit of luck so far. Skylar just hoped that he would maybe find him sometime soon. He was beginning to miss Spike greatly and it worried him a little too. During those few weeks, Skylar had also continued his training, wanting to get stronger. If he did find Spike, something told him that he would end up finding Blade too. He wanted to be strong enough so that he would be prepared for whatever may happen in the future. The blond had also learned a few more spells too, all dealing with the light element. Skylar was currently walking around the forest that surrounded Wildtree. His gaze was set on the clear blue sky above, which he could just make out through the somewhat dense canopy of leaves and branches. Birds chirped and small critters scurried to and fro. It was pretty peaceful there in the wooded area, much more so than in the village. Since the gem had failed to reach Fairvald, a lot of the villagers were a little more worried about being attacked by Blade. Wildtree's defenses had been strengthened while a few people worked diligently on making a new gem that could be taken to Fairvald. The blond continued walking through the forest. Spike continued to control his thoughts and he had been ever since Skylar learned that he was missing. His feelings for the older male had never faltered once and they probably never would. He loved Spike, and he just wished that he would find him sometime soon. However, it seemed that Skylar's wish would come true. After passing through some brush, he came into a fairly big clearing. His attention went from the sky to straight ahead of him and his eyes widened in surprise when he saw Spike walking in his direction. A large smile swept onto his face as he broke into a run towards the older male. “Hey, you're back!” the blond said cheerfully once he reached Spike. The smile slowly faded though as he noticed something different about the taller boy. His eyes weren't the usual green, but they were red instead. Not a single look of happiness was on the boy's face from seeing the blond either. Instead it was a look of coldness. Before Skylar could do anything else, a swift fist was thrown at his stomach. The punch had so much force behind it that Skylar was sent flying backwards. When he landed on the ground, he slid on it a few feet before he slowed to a stop. He forced himself to sit up as he gasped for air after getting the wind knocked out of him. The blond looked towards Spike in a slightly confused and saddened manner as he sat there. He was certain that Spike didn't do that on his own accord. The dark-haired youth was probably somehow being controlled by Blade. It seemed plausible to Skylar based on what he remembered the powerful warrior telling Spike before Skylar blacked out that one day. Once his breathing was on the right track again, Skylar slowly rose to his feet. A smirk spread across Spike's face as he walked towards the blond. When he was just a few feet away, he closed in the rest of the gap in a blink of an eye with one of his twin blades unsheathing to make a horizontal slash at Skylar. The blond quickly unsheathed his own weapon to block the attack. “Come on Spike, you don't want to do this,” Skylar said as their blades remained crossed. “Just snap out of it.” The dark-haired youth didn't respond. Instead he unsheathed his second twin blade and tried to take out one of the younger male's legs. Skylar jumped backwards to evade it. He didn't want to fight Spike because he didn't want to hurt the boy. His feelings for him were too great to allow him to harm him in any way. However, Spike wasn't thinking like that. He charged at Skylar and unleashed a barrage of slashes with his twin blades while moving forward to press the attack further. Skylar dodged the slashes accordingly while also moving backwards to keep the distance between them from closing further. “Come on, snap out of it,” pleaded Skylar as he continued to dodge the twin blades. There was still no answer. Skylar soon felt his back press up against a tree trunk. Spike made a quick cross slash with his twin blades, which Skylar quickly dodged by ducking underneath it. As soon as he did so though, a knee came up and hit him square in the face with enough force to practically crush his head against the rough trunk of the tree behind him. The blond's vision tunneled a little as he scrambled to his feet while trying to move away from the taller male to avoid further damage. However, upon rising to his feet, the hilt of one of Spike's twin blades was slammed into the back of his head. A grunt of pain escaped Skylar's mouth before he dropped to the ground unconscious.
The back of Skylar's head throbbed with pain as he gained back consciousness. His face contorted into a grimace for a moment before his eyes slowly opened. He found himself in a hospital room in Wildtree. He heard voices and he looked over towards the doorway to see Blaxton and a warrior standing there conversing. “I figured that something like this would probably happen,” sighed Blaxton. “Yes, you did,” replied the warrior. “Even though we strengthened our defenses, we still weren't able to prevent the village from suffering a lot of damage.” “It seems that we'll have no choice but to ban Spike from the village now,” said Blaxton. “And if we ever encounter him again, we'll have to kill him.” “No, you can't do that!” exclaimed Skylar as he shot up into a sitting position on the bed, ignoring the pain in the back of his head. The two men turned their heads to look at the blond. “We have no choice,” explained Blaxton. “He has sided with Blade and has attacked the village. This is something he can't be forgiven for. When we take care of Blade, we'll have to kill Spike too.” “But that wasn't the real Spike,” said Skylar. “He was being controlled by Blade.” “Oh, and how can you be sure of that?” “I just am.” “Sorry, but without any proof, I can't belief you.” “You have to believe me though. You should know that Spike wouldn't do something like this.” “I wish I could believe you, Skylar, but I can't, not after what Spike did to the village.” Blaxton and the warrior stepped out of the room afterwards. Skylar let out a sigh as he looked down at the bed a little. He didn't stay there in the hospital much longer either. After slipping on his boots and grabbing his sword, he made his way out of the building and onto the streets outside. The blond looked around a little as he walked through the village. All the villagers walked around gloomily, completely upset about the attack that had been launched on them. Several of the buildings had been damaged in some sort of way too, which were currently being repaired. After a few minutes, he spotted Grover leaning his back against a building with his gaze set on the ground. The blond slowly walked over towards his friend and stopped just a few feet away. “Hey,” Skylar greeted a little quietly. Grover snapped back into reality and looked over towards Skylar. He sighed before looking towards the sky. “Can you believe what that b*****d did to this village?” Grover asked. “It wasn't really him,” replied Skylar. “I'm certain that Blade was controlling him or something.” “Sure, sure,” said Grover sarcastically. “That b*****d's going to pay for what he did. If no one else sees to it, I will.” “But it was Blade that was really behind it,” explained Skylar. “Spike would never do something like this.” “Why the hell are you defending him?” Grover questioned a little angrily. “Because I—I know it wasn't him that did it. Spike would never do something like this.” “Don't even bother trying to tell me that. I'm not going to buy it. I don't even know how you can be defending that a*****e anyway after he killed your parents.” Skylar's eyes widened and his jaw slightly dropped when he heard this. He looked at Grover, trying to make sure he wasn't joking. However, he was completely serious about it. The brown-haired boy let out an exasperated sigh before walking away, leaving Skylar by himself. The blond sank into a sitting position with his back against the building. He stared at the ground in a saddened manner as the words Grover last said repeatedly played in his mind. Skylar didn't want to believe it; there was no way his parents would have been killed. Grover must have heard wrong. Skylar stood back up and raced to his house. When he got there, he slammed open the door and quickly looked around the small home. There wasn't anyone there though. Skylar couldn't believe it. There was no way his parents were dead. They were probably walking around the village, trying to figure out if they could help repair the village in some kind of way. They just couldn't be dead. However, hours passed and his parents never came home. The blond remained sitting on his bed with his eyes glued to the door, waiting for it to open and to reveal his parents stepping into the house. It soon became night, however, and there were still no signs of Skylar's parents. It was then when Skylar had no choice but to accept the inevitable fact that his parents were no longer among the living. Skylar spent a bit of the night mourning over the loss of his parents. The fact that Spike had killed his parents swam around in his mind, enjoying the damage it was causing the boy. However, Skylar didn't feel angry towards the dark-haired boy. It was Blade he was furious at. Not only had the man took Spike away from him, but he was the one that was truly behind his parents' deaths, and there was no way Skylar would ever be able to forgive Blade for something like that. © 2008 ChrisFeatured Review
