Chapter 17: MotivesA Chapter by Chris
Skylar was the first one to wake up the following morning. He was laying next to Spike with his head resting on the older male's bare, somewhat muscular chest. The blond just laid there, listening to the dark-haired youth's heartbeat and his calm breathing. A small smile crossed his lips, content with just laying there next to Spike. A minute or two passed and Skylar soon felt a hand come to rest on his arm. Skylar moved his head so he could meet the other's gaze. They both smiled at each other for a moment before exchanging a few words. The two boys laid there for a minute longer before deciding to get their clothes back on. Once they were dressed, they decided to resume their journey northward. “We don't have too much longer to go until we reach Fairvald, do we?” asked Skylar a couple minutes later. “No,” replied the taller male. “We'll probably get there in the afternoon at the earliest.” Both of them were a wee bit disappointed about this. There was a part of them that wished that the journey would last a few days longer. Now that they were both aware of each other's true feelings, they didn't really want to go back to Wildtree Village too soon. It was nice being out there by themselves. Both of them figured that they would probably just take their time getting back to the village once they delivered the gem. A couple hours passed by and the two soon came to the fringes of the forest. They slowly exited it to come to a cliff that was about fifty feet or so high. Their eyes went to the horizon, where they could just make out the outline of the large city of Fairvald. The two slowly walked towards the edge of the cliff so they could descend it and continue on their way towards the city that was just off in the distance. However, upon getting close to the ledge, a cloud of darkness soon burst in front of them. It quickly disappeared to show a black blur that tried to attack them with a broadsword. Spike and Skylar both managed to jump backwards just in time to avoid getting cut in half. Once their feet met with the ground, they looked towards the figure to get a better look. A man that was in his mid twenties stood there with his red eyes set on them. Long black hair fell down past his shoulders by a few inches and his lips were curved into a smirk. A black cloak flowed in the winds that swept through the area every so often. The man was also wearing a full body of black armor with the sword hanging down at his side in his right hand. “It's you...!” Spike spat out almost venomously upon recognizing who the man before them was. Anger immediately started to fill him. His hands quickly reached for the twin blades at his waist and unsheathed them. The fact about them having the gem completely left his mind. Right now, the only thing he was really concerned with was killing Blade. “So you remember me, huh?” asked Blade, the smirk widening. “You know, for not seeing me in so many years, I thought you would be happy to see me.” “What the hell gives you that kind of idea?” questioned Spike almost furiously. “I'm never going to be happy to see the man who killed my parents!” “I had nothing personal against them,” said Blade. “If they didn't try to get in my way, they would still be alive today.” “You b*****d. . .” Spike hissed. “But why did you kill the leader?” asked Skylar as his hand loosely gripped the hilt of his blade. “What did he ever do to you?” “He tried to dispose of me,” answered Blade. “He hired a couple people to try to kill me while I was asleep. He feared that I was becoming too powerful for my own good and that something bad would come out of it. I couldn't let him live after trying a trick like that, so I killed him.” “But you're only making his predictions come true by doing what you're doing now,” Skylar pointed out. A low growl emitted from Spike's throat before he said, “Forget it! I'm not listening to this anymore!” And with that, Spike rushed forward with his twin blades poised for the strike. However, upon getting within five feet from the enemy, a purple barrier appeared. Spike ran right into it and was sent backwards with great force. His back slid against the ground for a few feet upon hitting it before he coasted to a complete stop. Skylar watched as the dark-haired youth got back on his feet before looking towards Blade angrily. “Be patient,” Blade told Spike. “We can get to that in a few minutes.” He looked towards the blond. “And what does it matter? I follow my own path; I don't care about what that old geezer foresaw. I'm much better without that pathetic village, and this world will do much better under my reign. We can definitely do without the useless people of the world, don't you think?” “You're sick. . .” muttered Skylar as his face contorted into a look of slight disgust. “I don't care what you think about me,” replied the powerful warrior. “Not like you have what it takes to stop me anyway. Both of you will fail like the rest of them.” It was then when Spike remembered about the gem. Using its power would probably be the only way of defeating this man. Unfortunately, they didn't have the weapon the gem was supposed to be mounted on. Without it, they probably didn't stand much of a chance. “Skylar, forget about Blade and just go to Fairvald,” Spike told the younger male in a slightly hushed voice so that Blade wouldn't be able to hear him. “But what about you?” asked Skylar in the same tone of voice, his gaze unwavering from the enemy before them. “I'll try to keep him busy while you get the gem to the city,” explained Spike. “I'd rather try to fight him myself anyway.” “But—” “Just do it Skylar,” Spike commanded. “Whatever you two are planning over there isn't going to work,” Blade said as he watched the two converse. Skylar looked towards the powerful warrior as he thought it through briefly. Blade was far too powerful for Spike alone. The task of trying to hold the man off would prove to be too difficult for the black-haired youth. Skylar didn't want to see Spike die by this man; it would only make him feel guilty if he was killed. However, the dark-haired boy did have a point. If they failed to get the gem to Fairvald, then the whole world was surely doomed. “Alright,” sighed Skylar a couple seconds later. “Just don't die.” “You won't have to worry about that,” he assured the younger male. Spike muttered a quick chant and right afterwards the winds picked up around Blade. They soon became violent enough to cut through flesh. However, Blade, muttered a single word and the winds were immediately halted. While Blade was countering the spell though, Spike charged towards him. Right when Spike did that, Skylar thought now would be the perfect time to make a run for it. He ran around the two combatants and towards the cliff while muttering a small incantation. Stalagmites protruded from the side of the cliff, which would be used to help Skylar descend the cliff at a much quicker pace. However, Blade wasn't going to be escaped from so easily. Before he would be able to stop the blond from trying to flee though, he would first have to take care of Spike. He outstretched his free hand so that the open palm was facing towards the attacker. A large blast of dark energy was shot towards the him. Spike tried to jump to the side to avoid it, but the blast still managed to hit his arm. Spike was sent spinning through the air before landing on the ground with a thud. Right after that, Blade moved his hand so the palm of it was facing towards the blond. Skylar felt his feet leave the ground before he was pulled towards Blade by some invisible force. When Skylar reached the outstretched hand, it closed on the collar of his shirt so he was hanging there above the ground. Skylar kicked his feet and went to try to pry the hand loose, but to no avail. Blade stared at the boy for a moment, studying him closely, before a large smirk came on his face as if he knew something Skylar didn't. “I won't bother killing you,” the powerful warrior said. “I'll let you live through the time you have left.” However, Blade wasn't going to let the blond go without punishing him for his attempt of escape. Electricity was emitted from his hand and a yell of agony escaped Skylar's mouth. The shocking ceased a few seconds later and Blade tossed the boy to the side like a rag doll. Spike watched and a growl sounded from his throat afterwards as anger started to take almost complete control of him. He charged towards Blade with great speed, his mind being clouded with rage. All he could think about at the moment was killing the man before him. When he was within striking range, he sent a quick series of slashes towards Blade. However, he was far too skilled to be hit and he blocked every one of them with his broadsword. Right after blocking the seventh attempted slash, Blade pushed forward with his blade to knock Spike off balance. While the black-haired youth's guard was down, Blade quickly grabbed him by the collar of the shirt and lifted him off the ground. Spike wanted to slash at the man, but his strength was quickly draining from him. Before he even had a chance to try to fight back, Spike became too weak to even hold his twin blades, which were dropped to the ground. “You know, I think I might have an idea,” Blade said with a smirk as he looked at the weakened boy. “You once told me that you wanted to be like me. Well, now's your chance.” Darkness slowly started to engulf Spike now, who couldn't do anything but sit there like a puppet on a string. Skylar was laying on the ground just a ways away from the two. He wanted to help Spike, but unfortunately he was too weak after being shocked. His vision began to tunnel and he lost consciousness moments later with his last sight of Spike being him becoming consumed by the darkness. © 2008 Chris |
