Chapter 15: Hidden Feelings

Chapter 15: Hidden Feelings

A Chapter by Chris

It wasn't long until they finally came to an inn. They entered the small building and rented a room for the day. When they entered the room, Skylar slowly walked over to one of the beds and sat down. Spike didn't stay in the room long, but instead left saying that he would be back in about ten minutes or so.

Skylar now laid there on the bed with his hands interlaced behind his head. His half-opened eyes rested on the ceiling above. The blond couldn't help but to feel as though he felt a little odd. It wasn't because he was really worn out, but it was something else. He couldn't exactly place his finger on it, but it almost felt as though Death was hanging over his shoulder, waiting for the right moment to strike. He had been feeling this way ever since he gained back consciousness too. It didn't worry the boy though, mainly because he just thought it was maybe because of the fact that he nearly lost his life fighting Gore.

His thoughts were then directed towards Spike hugging him in the hospital. Skylar couldn't help but to admit that he did have feelings for the dark-haired boy—more than just friendship. He couldn't help but to wonder if Spike maybe had the same feelings for him. However, Skylar didn't wonder about it for too much longer because exhaustion finally took over and he ended up falling asleep.

Skylar woke up a few hours later. The early afternoon sun shined brightly in the window, casting a spot of light in the center of the wooden floor. The youth slowly sat up on the bed and looked around the room a little. Spike was gone, but there was a pile of clothes sitting next to the bed. Skylar looked down towards the clothes he was currently wearing. They were so torn that there was barely any part of Skylar's torso that wasn't showing. Figuring it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to put some new clothes on, he stood up from the bed and started to change into the new clothes, which weren't really any different from the ones he was wearing.

By the time the blond got dressed into the new clothes, Spike walked in. Like Skylar, he also had new clothes, but they weren't any different from the ones he was wearing when they first started the journey.

“Feeling better?” asked the dark-haired boy.

“Yeah,” replied Skylar, ignoring the feeling he had been experiencing ever since he woke up in the hospital.

       “Good,” said Spike.

Spike threw one of the apples he was holding to Skylar. The blond caught it and said a thanks before taking a bite out of the juicy fruit. Neither of the two said anything for a while as they ate the small bit of food they could afford.

“I asked around the town a little and someone told me that we're only about two days away from Fairvald,” said the older male when they both finished eating.

Skylar nodded. He thought about something for a couple seconds before saying, “Hey Spike, there's something I want to tell you. . .”

“What is it?” asked the taller male.

“. . . Never mind, forget about it.”

“Okay?” replied Spike with a slightly puzzled look on his face.

"Well, I'm ready to leave whenever you are,” said Skylar.

       “All right, let's go then.”

The two boys stood up and left the inn. After walking through the slightly crowded streets for a couple minutes, they finally exited the town. They made their way through the large plains, slowly inching their way to their destination. During that time, Skylar glanced at Spike ever so often. He almost wished that he knew what Spike's true feelings were for him. Skylar wanted to share his to the older male, but he wasn't sure how he would react. He didn't want Spike to hate him for it. Not only that, but if Spike reacted the wrong way, then it would probably only make the rest of the expedition awkward.

When the sun was getting ready to disappear below the earth's sill, the two boys decided they would stop for the night. Unfortunately, they had no means of making a fire, so they would have no choice but to go without one for the night. Spike spotted a lake a somewhat small distance away and decided he would fill their canteens up. After he did that, he returned to where Skylar was and handed the blond his canteen. Skylar took a sip of the water in it before putting it away.

“Hey Spike, I was kind of wondering about something,” began the younger male. “Why did you hug me back there in the hospital?”

“Just relieved you were all right is all,” replied Spike. It wasn't completely a lie. He was glad when Skylar gained back consciousness.

       “Oh.”

“Why did you ask?” Spike asked a little curiously, his hopes raising a little.

“Just wondering, that's all,” replied Skylar.

Both boys let out barely audible sighs. They were both rather disappointed by the other's answer. However, Skylar was a bit more upset about it than what Spike was. After sitting there for about a minute longer, the blond rose to his feet and made his way over to the lake. Once there, he sat at the sandy edge of it and stared out at the calm waters, sighing once more.

After about five minutes, Spike came over. He slowly approached the blond and came to stop a few feet behind him.

“Something wrong?” the black-haired boy asked.

Skylar looked behind him to see Spike standing there. He then brought his attention back to the lake before saying,

       “No, I'm fine.”

“You sure?” questioned Spike as he walked over to sit next to the other male.

       “Yeah.”

       “Doesn't sound like it.”

       “Well, I am.”

“Are you sure? Because if there is something wrong, you can tell me.”

“I'm sure,” Skylar said a little irritably.

“There was something you wanted to tell me earlier, wasn't there?”

“It wasn't anything important. Now just leave me alone.”

And with that, Skylar stood up and walked away to leave Spike by himself.

Is it all right the way it is now, or should I just let them share their feelings for each other now instead of waiting?
