![]() Chapter 8A Chapter by Chris![]() Alex spots Sean at the town's lake and goes to talk to him.![]()
It was a Saturday night and the sun was sinking below the horizon, getting ready to let the moon take its turn to reign over the sky that hung over the small town. Alex was walking down the street, making his way to his house. He had left Vincent's house not too long ago after playing a game of basketball with him. As Alex walked, he looked around the quiet and peaceful town a little. It wasn't long until he neared a small lake that sat to the left of the road just a ways away. The surface of the water sparkled a little in the small bit of sunlight that shined on it. A few ducks quacked every now and then as they swam around in the calm water. There was also someone sitting just a small ways away from the edge of the lake. Alex slowed to a stop as he stared at the person. He squinted his eyes a little to try to see the person better before finally realizing that it was Sean. A small smile came onto the brown-haired boy's face before he slowly walked over. He stopped just a couple yards away from the other male though and just stood there as he looked out at the lake. “It's pretty nice here at this lake, isn't it?” Alex said a few seconds later. Sean was a little startled from hearing the boy's voice. He wasn't aware of the fact that Alex had walked over there. Sean didn't bother looking at Alex though, but instead continued to stare at the lake. “Yeah,” he said a couple seconds later. Alex walked over and sat down just a few feet away from Sean. He continued to look out at the lake, watching the ducks take flight. “I used to come here a lot when I was a kid,” said Alex. “My dad always brought my older brother and I here to go fishing. I never really had much luck catching any though. Wasn't patient enough I guess.” Sean didn't say anything, but instead continued to look out at the calm waters. Alex turned his head to look at the shorter boy. “What about you?” he asked. “Did you come here a lot when you were little?” Sean shook his head before saying, “No. I wasn't really allowed to go outside much. I like to come here now though.” “So you live nearby?” “Yeah.” Alex nodded a little before looking back at the lake. He never really realized that Sean lived in the same town as him, but instead thought he lived in another town that was a part of the school's district. It made him wonder why he never saw Sean before the beginning of this year. Of course, Alex never rode the bus that much when he was younger. His father drove him most of the time. The brown-haired boy snapped out of his thoughts and looked back at Sean. It was then when he noticed something. “How'd you get the black eye?” Sean looked at Alex in an almost confused way before realizing what he was talking about. A slightly depressed sigh escaped his mouth before he looked back out at the lake. “It's nothing,” he said. Alex didn't say anything else. He looked at Sean for a moment, who seemed to be a little upset about something. A concerned look came onto Alex's face. “Something wrong?” he asked the dark-haired boy. “It's nothing important,” Sean simply said as his gaze remained fixed on the calm waters. Alex looked at Sean for a moment. Not wanting to pry, he just let it go and looked out at the lake himself, an almost inaudible sigh leaving his mouth as he did so. He still wanted to talk to Sean to get to know him a little more though. A few seconds later, he looked towards Sean again with a small smile on his face. “So what do you like to do in your spare time?” he asked. Sean sighed before saying, “Sorry, but I'm not really in the mood to talk right now.” The smile slowly faded from Alex's face. “Oh,” he said in a slightly upset manner as he looked down towards the ground a little. “I guess I'll leave you alone then.” Alex slowly got to his feet and started to walk off. Sean watched the boy for a moment before looking back out at the lake. He felt a little bad for doing that because he knew Alex meant well, but it was true about what he said. After having to take a beating from his dad earlier that day, Sean just wasn't really in the mood to talk to anyone. He just hoped that Alex didn't take it too badly. © 2008 Chris |
