Chapter 8

A Chapter by Chris

That week of classes went by a little quickly for Adam. He had gotten over everything that happened on Sunday and was back to his normal self. During that week him and Jake have also been talking a lot more and Adam believes that they have become real good friends.

It was now a Saturday. Adam and Jake decided to go to the movies as friends, or at least according to Adam anyway. They still had a while until their movie would start and so they decided to just hang out in the room and talk some. Adam didn't want to go meet up with Brad and his other friends because he knew if he did he may have a difficulty leaving them without being questioned about what he was going to do.

When there was about two hours left until their movie would begin, there was someone knocking at their door. Adam stood up from his bed and walked over to open the door. Standing on the other side of it was Brad.

“Hey dude,” Brad said. “Let's go meet the others and shoot some hoops.”

Adam hated this. Today was going so well and now Brad shows up. He couldn't tell him that he was going to the movies with Jake because he knew that would create suspicion. Instead he tried to use an excuse.

“Sorry, but I can't,” Adam said. “I have a paper that I need to do for English. It's really hard and I need all the time I can get this weekend to complete it.”

“Don't worry about it right now,” the taller boy said. “You need to have some fun.” He eyed Jake for a second and then looked back at Adam before saying, “And to get away from the f*g for a little bit.”

Adam couldn't come up with a better excuse. He just gave in and nodded. “Alright, let's go.”

The two boys left and made their way to the basketball courts. Adam didn't worry about it too much. Him and Jake still had two hours until their movie started after all. That should give him plenty of time to play a decent game of basketball with Brad and the other guys and still be able to go to see a movie with Jake.

Unfortunately, as the basketball game progressed, Adam forgot all about going to the movies with Jake. The entire thought of it completely vanished from Jake's head. By the time it was over, the sun was just about to disappear beneath the horizon. All of them were worn out too after playing basketball for about three hours straight.

“Man, that was an awesome game,” Brad said, panting some as he did so.

“Yeah, the best one we've had yet,” one of the other guys agreed.

“Too bad the cafeteria's probably closed by now,” another one said.

A look of realization came to Adam's face. “Crap!” he exclaimed. He was supposed to meet Jake an hour ago to catch the movie they planned to go see. They were probably already in the middle of the movie by now and it was probably too late to even bother trying to go see it.

        “Something wrong dude?” Brad asked.

Adam looked towards all of them. They were all looking at him in a confused way.

“Err, nothing,” he lied. “Just mad that we missed dinner is all.”

“Don't worry about it,” Brad said. “We can just sneak off campus and go get something to eat.”

“No, it's fine,” Adam said. “I have a bag of chips in my room. I guess those will just have to do for tonight. I need to go work on my English paper anyway. See ya.”

Before anything else could be said, Adam turned around and ran off in the direction of the boys' dormitories. Once he entered the building, he rushed up the stairs and into his and Jake's room. When he got there, he saw Jake sitting on his bed in an upset and bored manner. He looked towards Adam when he entered the room before just looking away.

“So you finally show up huh?” Jake said a little angrily. “Too bad it's too late to even go see the movie now.”

“I'm sorry,” Adam said. “I forgot all about it until now.”

“Why didn't you just tell Brad about us going to the movies tonight instead of lying like that anyway?”

“I just didn't want to let him know what we were going to do, that's all.”

        “Why? Because I'm gay?”

Adam opened his mouth, about to say something, but he caught himself before he could say anything. That was exactly the reason why he didn't tell the truth to Brad and Adam knew it. However, he didn't want to say it to Jake. Instead the brown-haired boy just sighed. Jake looked at Adam for a couple seconds before shaking his head in a disappointed way and letting out a sigh himself.

“I'm sorry,” Adam repeated. “But hey, we can always go see the movie tomorrow.”

“Oh yeah, and why should I even bother saying yes?” Jake said angrily. “You're probably just going to do the same damn thing you did today and ditch me while you go hang out with your friends. Forget it, just don't even bother.”

Adam sighed again. He didn't say anything else but just looked down towards the carpeted floor a little and nodded. He moved over to his bed and sat down. The two didn't say anything else to each other for the rest of that night.
