Farewell

Farewell

A Story by Devon Hartman
"

A new format of storytelling, at least for myself, that I'm trying to work with. I hope you guys enjoy.

Hey.

You seem to be new here.

Yeah.

That's what I thought.

You should follow me.

It can be dangerous around these parts.

We'll be fine, though.

Just stick with me and you'll be fine.

I promise.

Let's just keep moving.

That's it.

I have a safe place we can talk just around the corner.

You must really be some kind of person to wander into here.

This isn't your run-of-the-mill place, you see.

Ah!

Here it is.

Right through this door.

Watch your step.

The floor is a little uneven.

This is much better, isn't it?

It can be a pretty cold place, out there.

Let's warm up for a bit.

We'll figure out what to do with you in a few.

You seem a bit exhausted, anyway.

Time to take a load off.

Mmmmmm.

This is my favorite place to be.

So comfortable and familiar.

Things can be a bit hectic out there, you know.

You can take one wrong turn and end up somewhere you really didn't want to be.

Yes.

I'd much rather stay here for a while longer.

So, is a wrong turn how you ended up here?

I see.

Not one for conversation.

That's fine.

No harm.

No foul.

You seem like a decent person, regardless.

You're probably still in shock from this whole fiasco.

Getting stranded out there can be a bit horrific.

You're lucky I found you when I did.

You never know who could come out from behind you and slash your throat.

Stab you in the back.

Shoot you in the face.

Yikes.

Let's change the subject, shall we?

Haha!

Sorry.

I don't see many new faces around here.

It's probably for the best.

Like I said, this place is pretty terrible.

I bet where you're from it's beautiful.

No fear.

No pain.

You must be a pretty lucky individual.

Well, maybe not.

I mean you're here now.

But who knows?

Maybe you need to be here.

Maybe there's something you need to do here.

Probably not.

What can be done here?

There's not enough room in the universe to store this amount of filth.

No.

I'm sure it was a mistake that you are here.

You should leave.

Go back to where you came.

Hey!

I know.

How about you take me with you?

I'd love to see something new.

No?

Yeah.

You're right.

We've only just met, anyway.

Plus, you haven't said a single word since you've gotten here.

You're an odd one.

Haha!

Not that I don't enjoy your company.

I really do.

All good things come to an end, though.

We come into each other's world and then we leave.

It happens every day.

We don't even remember most of the faces we see.

Isn't that sad?

No.

You're right.

That's just how things are.

It would be silly for everyone to stay together forever.

We all have our own lives to live.

Although, it would be nice, wouldn't it?

Together forever.

...

What?

You have to get going?

Oh.

Okay.

Well, be safe out there.

Don't say I never warned you about what's out there.

Let me walk you to the door, at the least.

You know you haven't said a single word this whole time and yet I feel I know you so well.

Maybe it's because we're all the same on the inside.

Watch your step.

Here.

I'll hold the door for you.

Farewell, my friend.

It's been a pleasure having your company.

I hope you enjoyed mine, as well.

Be safe.

Don't do anything stupid like getting yourself killed.

Come again.

I'm sure I'll remember you.

Or not.
