The Jester

The Jester

A Poem by Epicness

There was a charming Kingdom long ago,
where brash knights fought to be the brave hero.
Where girls wore gold and silver to the ball
and jugglers entertained each one and all.

And in this realm one jester was a king,
for his good looks could make the bluebirds sing.
His wits were sharp, his words were full of praise,
and when he danced the crowds would clap for days.

And one girl valued him above the rest.
She saw him as the bravest and the best.
But when he looked at her all he could see,
was gold (for she was rich as one could be.)

Yes he was rich in looks, but poor in life,
for secretly he caused the kingdom strife.
He stole from it and took the realm for gold.
The Jester's heart was really very cold.

And so he went to find the foolish girl.
He smiled and soon her world was in a whirl.
He took a knee and lied to her with charm.
She couldn't see that he would mean her harm.

But still she ranked above him in the court.
The Jester knew the marriage would be fought.
He sang the family a charming song,
and like the pipers rats they came along.

And when the wedding day was drawing near,
the girl started to feel a little fear.
She'd seen the distance in her Jester's eyes.
and wondered if their marriage would be wise.

"I love you" said the Jester to the fool.
His words were no more kind than they were cruel.
The girl he said them to, she knew his game.
She loved him but he didn't know her name.

But love is not an easy thing to shake.
She loved him till she thought her heart would break.
She looked past all the greed she saw inside
and strove to find a way past all his pride.

And when the day arrived, she smiled and shone.
The Jester laughed inside, for he had won.
His grin was full of warmth that masked the cold.
And through the wedding vows he dreamed of gold.

He dreamed so much it gleamed within his eyes.
The girl stepped back in horror and surprise.
But tragically she'd realised just too late.
For guests had started in upon the cake.

And sadly, I'm afraid that's where we end.
The jester got more gold than he could spend.
The girl she got her wish, but wept each day.
She saw now the harsh price she'd have to pay.

For in this charming Kingdom long ago,
where brash knights fought to be the brave hero.
One girl was nothing but a gaudy prize.
A token to the Jester and his lies.
