Lover

Lover

A Poem by Harper Tate

She sits.

Sits still, with back propped

against the headboard.

Her heart pounds as a hummingbird.

To her left is the male she adores.

The soft glow of the candles

Gives subtle outside to his profile,

His soft skin embracing the warm flecks of light

Stroking at his cheek.

Eyes closed and gently fluttering with dreams.

She stares in awe at this, her man,

So soundly sleeping beside her.

She looks outside to see the harsh

Weather of winter embracing the city streets.

Silently, he stirs and places a hand on her thigh,

She places her hand on his.

“My lady, My love.

Stay with me now, stay with me always.”

She smiles at his still closed eyes and

Parts with a kiss that she leaves on his cheek.

Back to her husband.
