Chapter 5: I Can't Handle the Future

Chapter 5: I Can't Handle the Future

A Chapter by Harmony Grace

We all headed for the main living room when Rachel came out and greeted us.

“Hey Guys.” Rachel said. Micah grabbed Rachel by the arms and stared into her eyes.

“Uh, can I help you?” Rachel said eyes wide with fright.

“See, I told you it only works with you.” said Micah.

“Well, that wasn’t awkward at all.” said Rachel. “Hi.” she said to me.

“Uh…..hi” I said.

“Breath-taking isn’t it?” Rachel asked.

“Huh.” Was all I could say.

“Ok, so who’s up for bowling?” She asked. We finished with a game of bowling, and Rachel asked:

“So who’s up for Mini golf, and laser tag?”

“You don’t have a miniature golf course in the house do you?” I asked eyes wide.

“No, Of course not silly. It’s in the back yard.” She said.

“Oh, and what about your laser tag field?” I asked.

“Oh, that’s in the basement. Got it all decked out down there.” She said.

“Wow, that’s so cool.” I said childishly. We were playing mini golf when Micah came out from the house, well mansion.

“Umm Missy I have to talk to you.” He said.

“Oh, did you fix the time machine?” I asked.

“I wish, but no. There’s a gentleman here to see you.” He said.

“For me?” future me asked.

“Mhm, some guy named Brent Veens.” He said. Future me dropped the putter.

“Why, who is it?” Micah asked. Future me quickly told him the story, a very brief and to the point version.

“Oh, do I need to go talk to him first?” Micah said with the ‘I’m gonna punch him in the face’ fist.

“No, that would be unnecessary, and unchristian-Like. I’ll just go talk to him, and see what he wants.” Future me walk into the mansion. I followed myself just so I could peek in the window to see what was going on. I know it’s wrong to eavesdrop, but who’s to say this will even happen, I know lame excuse. Future me walked into the main room where Brent stood as tall as I had remembered him.

“Hello Brent.” Future me said kindly.

“Hi Missy, how have you been?” He asked.

“What do you want Brent? What was the point of you even coming here? I’m married, you’re married. Can’t we just live our lives?” She asked.

“I know I hurt you but Megan’s gone, I have no money left, I made a mistake I…” Future me interrupted.

“I really don’t want to hear it Brent. Whose Idea was it to break my heart and leave with a girl who you were so ‘Deeply’ in love with? Look, for me something great has come out of this, I’m Married to a wonderful Godly man, and 4 beautiful children. I will pray for you so hard Brent, but…” He interrupted me.

“Look, I made the hugest mistake a guy could ever make. Leaving you; what you and I had or rather have, is love. Megan and I didn’t have that. I just thought it was love.”

“Brent, Note the word had. I’m Married, I don’t love you, and Micah is my husband. Move on in your life, and let me continue in mine.” Brent, looking down now with shame said:

“I wish I had a time machine, because I’d go back and fix everything, I would have caused you all this grief and misery, you don’t deserve that.” He said, a couple tears coming down his face.

“But look on the bright side, I met Micah.” I said.

“No, that’s the bright side for you, the only women I truly love, and I gave her away, and missed out on the best thing this world had to offer me, besides Christ.” He said.

“Brent…” I said putting a hand on his shoulder.

“I have to go. I’m glad that you found a man who knew enough to keep the most precious thing close to him, and not hurt it. I pray you happiness all the rest of your life.” He said walking away.

“I’ll pray for you Brent.” I said. But no response came from him, he walked out the door and was gone. I quickly went back to where I was previously standing when future me came back outside, tears streaming down her face. Micah walked up to her.

“Oh no. Did he hurt you?” He asked.

“No.” future me said.

“Did he…” Future me cut him off.

“He didn’t do anything.” She said. Micah sat there for a minute, his eyes searching for something wrong, then it hit him.

“Do you still Love him?” He asked.

“What, no of course not. Micah, you’re the man I married not Brent. I Love you not him. I have children with you, not him. Ok, I do love you.” She reassured him.

“Ok, well Rachel’s Husband and I are going to finish a video game we started, and then we’ll go home ok? It’s been a weird day.” said Micah.

“Yea, ok.” Future me said. Hope walked up to future me.

“What’s really up? I still know you too well after all these years.” She said.

“Hope, Brent’s a mess. I’m fine, he’s not. I have to go back and fix this.”

“But Micah…” Hope started.

“I know, I just don’t know what to do, I mean I could just go back and tell myself to say no. That way I still meet Micah.”

“I guess. It’s up to you. I will help anyway I can though.” reassured Hope. Eli came and broke in.

“Dean called, said he fixed the time machine.”

“Really?” Future me asked.

“Yeah, so maybe we should get going?” He asked.

“Yeah.” I gathered my things and went back to the main room. “sorry we have to leave so soon. But we have to take care of stuff.”

“No problem, just come back another day.” Rachel said.

“Sure.” Micah said. We went back to the house.

 “Thanks Dean.” Micah said.

“Oh no problem.” My brother said.

“Ok, well I should be getting back home now huh? I’ve caused enough problems already.” I said.

“Now hold on.” Micah said. “You’re going to help us set things straight.”

“Hey, Maybe I can help.” Came a saddened voice.

“Brent? What are you doing here?” Future me asked.

“Well I just heard you had a time machine, and I’d really like to fix a few things.”

“I don’t know.” Future me said.

“Please?” asked Brent.

“Fine.” Future me said. Brent hopped into the time machine and off he went, to a time he wished he didn’t have to relive.

Brent’s fixing

Before he knew it he was walking down the halls of his school. August 12th, 2010, where he found his past self pacing the halls saying:

“Come on man, you love her just ask her. You’re already not going out with her, how much worse can it get? Come on just as…” He was cut short.

“Hey Brent.” Said past Missy.

“Hi, actually I’ve been looking for you. Something I need to ask you.” He said.

“Could you please hurry though, I really have to go.” She said hurriedly.

“Sure, umm, well see I wanted to ask if you’d like…” He was once again cut off.

“Hey Brent.” Future Brent said.

“What?” Past Brent looked to see a figure by room 2.

“Come here.”

“Hold on Missy, real quick.” He said.

“Yeah?” asked past Brent.

“Don’t ask her out.” He said.

“What? How’d you know I was going to…” Future Brent stopped him. He explained everything until past Brent believed him.

“But I love her.”

“Let her go.” Future Brent said.

“I can’t…I Love…”

“Look in 5 years you get engaged and all just to break her heart.” He said.

“What? Seriously?” Past Brent asked.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t see a women’s heart break right in front of me while I told her I was ‘in love’ with someone else.”

“But I could never Love any one else..” Past Brent said.

“You think that way now, until she comes and makes you doubt yourself. Now look if you truly want her to be happy, let her go.” Future Brent went and returned to his time.

“Yeah, ok.” A tear ran down his cheek. He went back to past missy. “I just wanted to know if you wanted me to carry your books for you.” He said.

“No, I’m fine. Are you ok?” Past missy asked.

“Oh yeah, I’m fine. I’ve been having stuff get into my eyes lately, and this place is kind of dusty so I’m fine.” He said.

“Oh, well if that was all. I have to go. See you later Brent.”

“yeah, see ya later.” She walked out the door. “Because I love you, I let you go.” More tears ran down his face.

          Back to the Future

“Hey how’d it go?” asked Future me.

“It went.” Brent said. “Although in a few minutes you’re going to think you haven’t seen me in ages.” He said.

“What? But you’re standing right…Brent!? Oh my gosh I haven’t seen you since high school!” Future me said.

“Hey, who’s this hun?” asked Micah.

“this is an old friend from high school. His name is Brent. Why’d ya stop by again?” Future me asked, and this was such a site, I was the only one who remembered him.

“Oh, heard this is where ya lived, and thought it’d be nice to drop by.” He said.

“Well you were right.” Future me said.

“Well I should go, I can’t stay long.” He said.

“Aw, too bad. Well it was so nice to see you.” Brent started to walk away. He looked at me then disappeared. Well I guess it made sense, because he would never have gone this way, So weird how this all works, wait, then how’d I meet?

“Micah!!!” Future me screamed. I turned and not to my surprise Micah was disappearing before our eyes.
