Lampost

Snapshots and Half Lifes. A short story.

"

Voracious is the vortex when it comes to town, to tear me away to the fate that time and circumstance have laid upon me. I have seen those acrimonious winds ensnare countless others. Seen the horror left, from its center, to slither away flesh ripped in chunks left strewn on the cold concrete leaving the victim devoid of any human qualities. Not me though. I will be ready for it.

Not much is understood about the vortex. It appears at random and disappears just the same. There is no warning when the vortex comes for you. It also appears to transcend the laws of solid matter making it impossible to hide.

There is a sturdy green lamppost at the end of my street, and there I sit each day and night. When I first experienced the vortex, September 06 to be precise, I was caught off guard and I swear to God that lamppost saved my life. I have since acquired four walls and a toilet. I had visitors before that but in my haste I forgot to add a door. I don't blame them to be honest. It does get terribly tiresome trying to hold a conversation through thick stone walls.
