THE MASKA Poem by Mark T. LittlejohnDeep inside the brown iris of my eye, a tear has formed and your image is blurred Whatever it is that has occurred is something for me to know and for you to find out But I’m not going to cry out for your help Because I hide behind this mask This mask that for years as keep others away from the pain that I have incurred When removed it reveals pain as a thunderstorm deferred or a reaction to something so petty and absurd It wants to cry out for attention like a child who has been hurt. It’s the only thing that’ll protect me and keep me out of harms way from the Who? What? When? Where? Or How? of the meddlesome people of today. And keep me from being the Defendant in one of Life’s Trials of Tribulation. But I’ll let God judge me instead of being hung by a dirty dozen Because he knew what was behind the mask before I used it to cover the hurt that now forms within the creases of my face. I just have to hide behind the mask, AS IF it has the power to erase. © 2008 Mark T. Littlejohn |
