Reasons For Doing Things

Reasons For Doing Things

A Poem by Haley Stone

I once saw a boy
go to great lengths
to fish a dragonfly
out of a pond.
He laid it on a leaf
in the sun, standing guard
until it dried out
and flew away.

I noticed
that it never said 'thank-you, '
but the boy,
proud and self-satisfied,
knew it didn't matter
and smiled anyway.
