Stop

Stop

A Story by Haley Stone

She hated stop signs.  They just never made sense to her.  They never said, "Go," but everyone did, anyway.  Stop signs felt so final, so conclusive, and everyone cheated them the way they would cheat the conclusiveness of death, if they could.  She wondered what would happen if she stopped at one, and simply stayed there.  People would get angry, but she had a valid argument.  Even those flashing red lights were better than stop signs.  It would take you forever inching through the intersection, braking each time it lit up, but at least you were still moving.  Perhaps these were more ridiculous than the stop signs, but they did allow for a flow of traffic.  Yes, she hated stop signs, red as the devil, that people cheated like death.  There was just something not quite right about them...

And don't even get her started on the ones that say, "Do Not Pass."
