"

A brother dies.

"

Denver was dying. He lay half-naked in his bed, his shirt open to his abdomen and his jeans pulled down to his knees. James walked into the room. He held in his hand a china rabbit doll dressed in a red pajama. After a minute of silent and exchanging looks, James sat at a three- legged stool and smiled at his brother.

“Hi,” he said, “I guess that you needed to meet Jackie.”

He placed the china rabbit at his brother’s bony chest.

“Jackie…” Denver shivered and threw the rabbit from hand to hand. “I missed him, hello Jackie…” He grinned and began sucking his thumb.

“How is your back buddy?” Jack asked.

“My back,” Denver parted his lips and placed a hand at a red lump at his back. “It hurts Denver...” He mumbled and began crying.

“No, no...” Jack brought his chair near the bed and hugged his brother. “Big boys don’t cry...”

Denver sucked his thump again and stuttered. “Doctor told mama that I is to join Big daddy,”

Between Jack and Denver, big daddy meant God.

“Big daddy love you buddy,” Jack said, “he can’t wait to see you.”

Denver raised a quivery finger and pointed at the window. “I don’t want to go to big daddy; I want to be with Jack and mama.”

“Jack and Mama will go to big daddy one day,”

Jack got to his feet, turned his head away from Denver and wiped a tear. His brother was supposed to die after a few minutes. He could not watch him any longer. After kissing him on the head, he sauntered out of the room. The last tear over his brother was already shed.
